The Story of the Barbary Corsairs: Islamic Pirates of the Mediterranean 1504-1881, by Stanley Lane-Poole

When the blue Mediterranean turned blood red

Powers that rise must fall-it is the way of things and is true of all, from the smallest realms to the mightiest of empires. There is no place on earth where this is more evident than in the lands and waters of the Mediterranean, where once the Greeks held sway, then Rome fought and conquered Carthage as it spread its influence-and the Christian faith-throughout Europe. In the 7th century, in the Arabian Peninsula, the prophet Mohammed founded Islam; it too spread quickly. It became inevitable that these two great empires of faith would both seek to dominate the region; so there came a time when Christianity and Islam overlapped and the crescent banner flew on the battlefields of Europe and particularly of Spain. By the beginning of the 14th century only Al-Andalus remained in Muslim hands and in 1492 Granada fell to the Catholic monarchs and the Moors pushed back to North Africa. Now the west began to separate from the east and territories and battle lines were drawn; the day of the Barbary pirate had come. Allied to the Ottoman sultan these ruthless freebooters were a powerful force able to hold cities and territories and to engage in pitched battles and lightning raids in search of goods and slaves. The story of the sea war of the Mediterranean, between Islam and the great sea-going city states of Europe and the famous Knights of St. John, makes fascinating reading. The Battle of Lepanto broke the corsairs as a major threat, but what makes this account especially interesting is that it follows the activities of the corsairs-who were still a formidable force-into the 19th century. Here the reader will discover the actions of the United States Navy at Tripoli, the Battle of Algiers in 1816 and the final struggles against the French at the close of the century. This is a fascinating and engrossing read for any enthusiast of naval and maritime history.
Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Nineteenth century history of the Barbary Pirates
By Hill Country Bob
The review by ElliotCB is excellent and provides a useful guide to the book. I concur in my admiration for the author and his research and writing abilities. The book does show its age, however, this did not bother me after I understood his style.

Interesting book written over one hundred years ago. Well researched and comprehensive story regarding the Barbary Corsairs and the reactions to them over the centuries by western countries and navies. The Barbary Corsairs were pirates sponsored by Muslim city states in North Africa. Essentially, they were pirates preying on Christians and Jews of Western Europe, and later America. European countries generally paid tribute to the pirates to keep their ships from being attacked and taken and their sailors and others imprisoned or held for ransom. Their practices were much like the Somalia pirates of today. They were a parasite on the productive citizens of the western world. Well done book. It is worth thinking about and applying the lessons to today.

History from a different perspective
By Ocean View Retiree
The book was published in 1890, so it exhibits the plodding style of the day, and it is, after all, a historical text, not a novel. Don't expect dashing heroes, although many of the captains and admirals were both enterprising and daring. What it does present is an account of naval warfare in the Mediterranean in an age where locomotion was provided by men (often slaves) at oars, cannons were primitive, and combat was hand-to-hand. The pirates of north Africa terrorized commercial shipping along the Spanish, French, Italian, and Greek coasts, raiding coastal towns, carrying off men for slaves, treasure, and women for concubines. The Christian ships reciprocated, of course, and life was pretty exciting. The rise of the Ottoman empire, with huge navies, also wanted in on the plunder, and the triumvirate of Turks, Christians, and corsairs battled constantly. The huge battle of Lepanto was one of the last of the great conflicts of oared navies.
The onset of sailing ships did nothing to stem the corsairs, and European conflicts led one power after another to combine with the pirates to harass their enemies. Finally, first the Americans, then the English, and finally the French to subdue the north Africa satrapies and end the age of the corsairs.

If history interests you, the book is informative on a period in time most Americans Don't know much about.

This book gives the reader some understanding how history has set up the events we see in the headlines today. We need to learn from the past and refuse to coexist with terrorist.
