I loved it! Such a wonderful book!

It was an amazing book. It may not be for everyone but I certainly enjoyed it! It made me feel the hopelessness of their situation. It was a real thriller! I adored all the twist and turn, even if they didn't work in favor of the main characters. The things that you don't see coming. A wonderfully balanced book, and so realistic in the aspect that, maybe good might not always win, at least not without suffering. A beautiful story I will happily read again.

About the Author

Anne M.�Barger, DVM, DACVP is Clinical Professor of Pathobiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.� She is the section head for clinical pathology for the University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and is an editorial board member of Veterinary Clinical Pathology.

Amy L. MacNeill, DVM, DACVP graduated from the University of Florida with a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1998, became a board-certified veterinary pathologist in 2004, and was awarded a PhD in virology and immunology in 2005. That same year, she joined the faculty at the University of Illinois as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathobiology and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.� She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology at Colorado State University.

A fresh aspect on clinical pathology

A lot of information is packed into this book’s 264 pages. Combining the clin path and lab techniques makes sense and provides a symbiotic relationship. The chapters are organized well and consist of learning objectives and key terms in the beginning, followed by case examples and some introductory paragraphs. The rest of the chapter is then in an outline form that is thorough and easy to follow. Highlighted boxes noted as “technician tips” provide important information through a Pearls of Practice format. Full color photos with information also provide another level of comprehension.

What makes this book stand out from the others is the case studies, complete with interpretation and comments to ensure that the technician understands what is happening.

Some chapters have multiple choice questions at the very end to further cement the objectives and make the technician think critically. Answers to the quiz and further questions can be found at [...].

Accurate results can only be gotten if the sample is prepared correctly; Chapter One – Getting Started covers proper ways to obtain and package blood, urine, and feces. Basic use of a centrifuge, microscope, stains, and blood tubes are also disussed, along with a section on laboratory safety.

Chapter Four – Clinical Chemistry explains how to prepare a sample for chemisty analysis, what normal and abnormal values are, and what the clinical significance is for those abnormal results. Chapter Five – Urinalysis does the same as Chapter Four but with urine.

The reason I mention both of those chapters is that I believe this will be an invaluable resource to any technician; because knowing the “why” is just as important as knowing the “how to”. The information is presented clearly and concisely, and technicians can refer to the chapters again and again to reinforce their knowledge.

Chapter Seven – Minimizing Laboratory Errors is the final, very important chapter. Errors in research are inevitable, but knowing how to properly plan and be aware of how they happened is an invaluable skill. QC and QA procedures are discussed, as well as the various types of errors.

Further reading sources are cited at the end of each chapter, and there is a glossary at the back of the book.

This first edition will be welcomed by those looking for a fresh aspect on clinical pathology.

For Cain's Greater Good

In this latest installment of the Cain histories, Inquisitor Vail takes us to a time where our Hero of the Imperium was part of Grand Lord Zyvan's circle of advisors. The tau have invaded a key warp world and things are not looking well for the Imperial forces, on the brink of surrender and vastly outgunned (given that the tau are technologically more advanced than the Imperials i would say so). But when the tau learn that Cain is there, they extend an offer of a truce (apparently the tau consider Cain a true warrior and hero - much to his surprise). Fearing the worst, Cain meets up with an old face from Gravalax the tau El'ssii where he gives the reason for the truce - the Great Devourerer is coming and both sides need to prepare for the coming invasion (as part of Hive Fleet Kraken). Abandoning the world they were fighting over, Cain, with the ever present (in more ways than one) Jurgen at his side, goes to a nearby forge world to prepare for the invasion. There he not only meets another old friend from the Reclaimer Space Marines, but also runs into a nightmare from the previous book as well. Can the Tyranids be stopped, or will this truly be Cains final adventure?

I love the Cain series along with Gaunt's Ghosts and Gortek and Felix. This book, while well written, did not have as many of the usual humor or enteraining escapades you would expect from a Cain novel (though there were quite a few). Cain, despite his many flaws (and as he would say against his better judgement), really shined as a true hero in this one. But my favorite will always be Jurgen, always there making sure the commissar is not only protected, but has a cup of tanna ready if needed.

It has the wrong title.

I've greatly enjoyed the Cain series but found this latest book to be the least interesting so far.
Not to say it wasn't well written or anything. It's simply that a WH40K book with the title "The Greater Good"
and a picture of the Tau on the front you'd expect it to involve the Tau. Instead they feature heavily in
the first 33 pages and then disappear. They're in maybe 25 pages of the rest of the book.

I was hoping for an engaging plot involving the Tau and got a story about tech priests.

Enjoyed by a Tyranid Fan

I had fun with this book, which was the first Ciaphas Cain novel I've read. As a Tyranid fan, I enjoyed being able to read a book featuring one of my favorite bad guys, while still being a fun novel with a sympathic main character. The book balanced the horror of the alien menace, not watering it down to favor the hero (as happens too often). If anything, the hero was the one being watered down as he was saved by deus ex machina repeatedly. The style was amusing, with the first person narration being edited and commented on after the fact. I found the footnotes getting a little annoying as the novel progressed, but they were certainly amusing, particularly where the author used them to essentially admit he wanted to jump ahead.

An Incredible Story

Billed as a psychological thriller this novel caught my eye. It's also billed as horror, my least favorite genre. But it depends on how you define horror. Horror just for the sake of horror I shy from. But once I began reading this book, I didn't want to put it down, partly because the writing itself is so good...and because as I kept reading I became more and more involved with the characters, largely because the author is superbly skilled with dialogue, characterization, action, plot, pacing, description....this amazingly imaginative author does it all.

Every individual on the planet is on a journey. So are the characters in The Catacombs, in their case a horrifying one. But within the darkest of places we can see ourselves in ways that we couldn't if we were always in the light. This inner exploration must, of necessity, involve opposition: good vs. evil, darkness vs. light. The darkness in this novel is as deep as the inner recesses of natural man's soul, the setting--the catacombs--being a character in itself to help the reader feel not just absolute physical darkness but also the darkness that lurks in the hearts of men.

It is at 65% (kindle edition) where one of the towering characters, Zolan, voices this theme: "

"We are all savages at heart, Daniele. We are inherently a violent species. We commit wars, genocide, murder. That is why every society is built upon the foundation of law and punishment. We cannot trust ourselves. We need to be kept in line."

There are very few such explicit didactic truths in the book. Rather, most truths/nuggets of wisdom surface through the actions and interactions of the characters who survive two days in a subterranean house of horrors--a vast burial ground--beneath the city of Paris. Two days of confrontations with men and women who have been both emotionally and physically disfigured; characters who exemplify man's inhumanity to man.

But there is good even in the darkest of hearts, as in Zolan's, a flawed man who loves his daughter. But sometimes the darkness is too deep, too complex, and some can't escape it. Others want to, and struggle toward the light, as does the protagonist, the mostly-first-person-narrator Will, and the thirteen-year-old physically disfigured Katja. I will see Katja in mind's eye for a very long time. For me, she is the most compelling character in the story. Which brings me to the skill with which the author handles multiple viewpoints, allowing the reader to see inside some of the characters' minds.

I can't say enough in praise of this superbly written novel that had me thinking: How many people, metaphorically speaking, live underground, disfigured emotionally or physically or both? Come to the catacombs and follow their journey through a place that's a mirror image of the "real" violent world in which we live, a violent world above ground that the main characters long for in their darkest hours.

A scary journey to the horror underworld

In the Prologue, the reader is exposed to a picture of acute fear: someone running to escape horror and death. The novel then reverts to almost two days earlier. The story begins to unfold, drawing the reader willingly toward the Catacombs. From the Prologue, the reader wonders what monstrosities inhabit the underearth. Parts of the novel are edge of your seat action and suspense, but the story is more than that. There are insights into human nature. We see it in the contrasting personalities of the explorers and in the contrast between evil that becomes pervasive and accepted as normal in the Catacombs and the un-evil and at times good within the explorers. The characters are colorful, engaging, and believable with contrasting personalities that adds interest. The writing is polished -- descriptive narrative that pulls the reader along. GRIPPING, & SUSPENSEFUL

I was so drawn into this story, that many times I had episodes of claustrophobia, and would have to put the book down and walk away and tell myself it is just a book...that I really wasn't stuck miles beneath the city, and in those small catacombs where a person could easily get stuck and or lost, and never to be heard of again. Kept me on the edge right up to the end. This was the first book I had read by Jeremy Bates, but it won't be the last! I highly recommend this book and Author to anyone looking for a suspenseful, gripping, take you to the edge kind of story. Here it is!
