How can you not like something that gives you the answers?

The solutions manual is helpful but I have found that the answers often do not match that of listed in the back of the textbook. I think it could be clearer in information and explanations as it often skips multiple steps of calculations and algebra. Overall, I'm glad I got it to help me get started on a problem, but it doesn't really calrify the information for me.

The only child of Oscar Wilde's dissipated older brother Willie, Dolly Wilde (1895-1941) led a life as scandalous and glittering as her uncle's: she, too, loved her own sex, and her longest romantic relationship was with American heiress Natalie Clifford Barney, who was host of the most important Parisian literary salon of the 20th century. Unfortunately for Dolly's posthumous reputation, she "was an artist of the spoken word" whose only written legacy was her marvelous correspondence. Quoting liberally and perceptively from those letters, American playwright Joan Schenkar brings Wilde to life in a modernist biography that is written in prose as sparkling as Dolly's fabled bons mots. Schenkar eschews conventional chronology to consider Wilde's life thematically, from her lesbianism to her taste for smart society to her self-destructive identification with Uncle Oscar. She reminds us just how remarkable and accomplished were the women at Barney's salon (journalist Janet Flanner, novelist Djuna Barnes, and artist Mina Loy, among them) and how much they esteemed Dolly Wilde. Yet, her biographer downplays neither Wilde's addiction to drugs nor the sad loneliness of her death (possibly from a drug overdose) at age 45. Dolly Wilde, born the year Oscar Wilde went to prison, bore a striking resemblance to her famous uncle and spent her life both burdened and animated by his legend. She inherited much of his charm, a portion of his wit and none of his genius. Consequently, she left behind little of substance save the fond recollections of her friends and lovers, among them salon hostess Natalie Clifford Barney, New Yorker Paris correspondent Janet Flanner and Russian actress Alla Nazimova, and several bundles of love letters. Such a dearth of achievement leaves a biographer at a considerable disadvantage. The playwright Joan Schenkar, who appears to have fallen as much under Dolly's spell as any of her contemporaries, resolves these difficulties by approaching Dolly's life thematically, inventing and dramatizing in the absence of fact, interpreting what facts there are from a variety of perspectives. Such an approach requires her to ignore chronology and with it whatever impact the larger historical and political context may have had on Dolly's development. What emerges is a flamboyant sketch of that glittering, often frantic, sometimes brilliant society of rich lesbians that flourished between the wars in London and Paris. In this milieu, Dolly seems a kind of lesbian Zelda Fitzgerald, self-destructive, addicted, often foolish and, by the end of her brief life, quite sad. Schenkar strives valiantly to make of Dolly's life a tragic work of art. While she is able to convey Dolly's charm and attractiveness, she is not quite as successful in convincing the reader that her subject is sufficiently consequential to merit a full-length biography. Fascinating but Tragic

Yes, 4 stars means I liked it. It was a fascinating age, the early 20th Cent in Paris, no matter who the subject matter is. This Wilde seems to have been almost a mistake on the part of the profligate father and the deer-in-the-headlights mother. She was soon shoved off to boarding school. So yes, she looked more like Oscar than Oscar's kids. Interesting, and she had his way with words. But she was a lost soul, taken in by those who loved her, other women.

I loved the book

I loved the book. I had an interesting perspective on a subject that there is literally nothing about. My only issue was that there were formatting problems and some places had typos. Other places the font conversion seemed to mess up whatever effect was trying to be produced. Maybe the Author could work on fixing the formatting/usability issues and it would be more enjoyable. Thank you.

Writer's style provokes opposite, intense reactions

I've read with some interest the previous reviews of "Truly Wilde," and am not at all surprised that the author and her book would inspire such diverse -- no, opposite -- responses in readers. In this review, I thought I would try to explore the reasons behind those responses, in others and in myself.
To be frank, it took me several months to work my way through this book, an amount of time I rarely dedicate -- or need to dedicate -- to any book on the first read (unless I'm being paid to read and review it!). I was frequently driven to verbal expressions of frustration with the repetitive, coy, repetitive, acrobatic, repetitive prose style used by the author. I would put the book down on the nightstand, swearing not to pick it up again.
Then curiosity would get the better of me. Dolly is, after all, a fascinating, complex person, one who clearly suffered personal, public, and familial demons with amazing grace, while failing to profit from the many natural advantages granted by her personality, wit, style and physical resemblance to her famous uncle. She had it all, yet she had nothing, and in fairness to her I somehow felt it important to keep reading and, thus, pay tribute to her place in history.
And in fairness to the author, her prose is often brilliant. Whether or not she sat down and wrote the book from first page to last, in that order, she certainly seems to find her mark by the second half of the book. Her initial, clumsy and often annoying verbal acrobatics become -- by the final chapters -- a graceful ballet. It's a style that isn't always successful even when done well, and the contrast between the early chapters and the latter chapters may go some way in explaining the varied responses given by the reviewers here on Amazon.
The author quite consciously and freely admits in the introduction to having defied the traditional, chronological method of biography. Her chapters are not arranged in order of the major events in Dolly's life; rather, they are organized according to various themes, and in some respects this works. Unfortunately, the themes are not always so different from each other that they justify a separate chapter. As a result, stories and events are often told more than once, gossipy tidbits about the primary (and secondary) personalities are repeated throughout the book -- as if we needed reminding -- and descriptions of Dolly's physical, emotional and mental characteristics and states are given again and again.
All of which gives the feeling that you're riding on a carousel. The scenery starts to look awfully familiar.
I understand that the author's desire to take this unique approach was inspired by Dolly's own 'mode de vie.' Dolly lived in the moment, and each moment was as valid as any other, regardless of when it occurred. I admire the author's willingness to take a risk and tell Dolly's story in a thematic, rather than chronological, fashion. However, this method places additional burdens on the writer to make sure that she is properly guiding the reader along on an unfamiliar ride -- and unfortunately, Shenkar's all-over-the-map, alternately-flying-and-crashing prose makes this trip a difficult one, at least at the beginning.
To sum up, I'd suggest that anyone who is interested in the story of Dolly Wilde should read this book. It IS a fascinating story, and a window onto a world of women artists that we have rarely been offered. Try to get past the repetition and fireworks until you're at least into the second half of the book, when the author really hits her stride.
On the other hand, if the topic alone is of only moderate interest to you, you are likely to find yourself quickly bogged down and disappointed. Summer reading this is not!

About the Author
Bill holds advanced degrees in applied sociology and archival methods. Having worked in this field for over twenty-five years, he has also authored 15 books on the history of AA and 12-step recovery. He worked at the headquarters of Alcoholics Anonymous for five years in New York City. Bill's primary interest is the founding period of AA and the writing of their text in 1939.

An ESSENTIAL book for 12 Step Recovery

This should be a required text for 6th & 7th Step work! This book is very user-friendly and easily comprehended by those who are new to recovery. I truly believe that the instructions contained within the "Big Book" are absolutely essential for recovery. However, I also find it is very deceptive in it's brief and concise explanation of the 6th & 7th steps... as if to suggest they don't need as much attention. Therefore, I have noticed that these two steps are often completed in the time it takes to read the two short paragraphs in the Big Book. Fortunately, there is more instruction and discussion in the "12 & 12", however, the language and metaphor are often quite challenging for those who are new to recovery. That's where this book comes to the rescue! This book walks you through the thought processes of recognizing, identifying and eliminating those defects of character or "shortcomings" which cause us to remain unhappy, unsatisfied and unsuccessful in life. This book provides a fresh and in-depth look at steps 6 & 7 in way that anyone can understand. I have found it to be effective in helping the newcomer to identify the underlying fears with cause the defects of character to activate, so that they may learn the skill of NOT "stepping on the toes of their fellows" and thus, create more harmony in their lives and relationships with others. I highly recommend this book as an essential supplement to the Big Book & 12 & 12 when working steps 6 & 7.

Spiritaulity on the Graduate Level

Bill Wilson referred to AA as a 'Spiritual Kindergarten'. If that is so, then the material in 'Drop The Rock' is for those of us at the Masters or Doctoral level.

This book is NOT for the newcomer. Nor is it for those who are blissfully filling their days by 'not drinking and going to meetings'. 'Drop The Rock' is clearly targeted at those who have been sober for some time, but find there are still persistent annoying life problems that resist the all the work one has put into fixing these flaws.

This book is short, concise and to the point. The authors have left out much of the new-agey recovery jargon and slogans that weighs down most meetings. Instead, they approach Steps 6&7 from a practical and logical perspective which demystifies the two steps on which so much of our future happiness hangs.

It is an excellent book. One which you could build a meeting or study group around. However, the book is not for everyone. 'Drop The Rock' is only for those who know the intense hunger of desiring real change in life.

Helps with the 'weight" ;)

I am a grateful 12-stepping person. I recognized my need for coaching as I've floundered a bit even with sponsor help. I Googled "6th step" and this was a found treasure. It is good for me as I've been in a program for three years now and able to more honestly take action to heal. I read one review that suggests this book could be a bit too much for a newer 12-stepping person... This may be so. For me I had to come to know myself enough to see I needed such a tool...

And what this book does is provoke a deeper self-awareness. Am I still under the weight of 'rocks' that I cling too and which limit my reaching a new platform of peace in my life? Have I been willing to do my part in changing what I can? Do I expect my HP to do it ALL for me...like remove a limiting habit...yet I embrace it so darn fervently? Can I logically expect my HP to override my will? I need to do my part... And thus goes the 12-stepped baseD discussion of changing myself... Of the classic "3-A's" of awareness, acceptance and action.

I credit this book as a vehicle that is helping me motivate myself to drop the rocks and to BE WILLING to have my HP remove the layers of gnarly sediment that has hidden the buoyant soul...I am suggesting a buyer consider buying too "Fearless Relationships" by Karen Casey as this book motivates and challenges me to think differently and be willing to act-as-if....but Casey's book provides a more 'how-to-do-it'...and reading them combined ( and rereading) has been good.

How likely is it for photographs and words of naked girls and women to illuminate, even heal? How likely is it for a man to have made those photos?

Tens of thousands of people have seen exhibitions of Frank Cordelle's Century Project and been overwhelmed by it. They have laughed, they have cried. Some have hurriedly left the exhibition space--and returned, with every friend and family member they could find.

What are these girls and women doing here? They are exposed--but so are we. What are they telling us? See us and hear us, for our bodies and souls are your revelation.

They eliminate any pretense, from viewers as well as themselves, by their personal physical and emotional disarmament. That on its own defuses concern over nudity. The nudity here does not suggest degradation or immorality but embraces sincerity and valor. It represents both vulnerability and strength.

The people in The Century Project may be funny or sad, placid or severe. Many reveal calm or exulting spirits, refusing to be embarrassed about their lives, refusing to be ashamed of their bodies.

Unlocking the soul

Bodies and Souls is the long-awaited publication of Frank Cordelle's The Century Project. Although numerous books present womanhood in picture and word (Laurie Toby Edison's Women En Large and Wise Women by Joyce Tenneson come to mind), Bodies and Souls is perhaps the most successful to date in giving you a strong sense of who the women (from birth to age 94 so far) are and the pain and joys they've experienced.

Each entry consists of a nude photograph of a brave female and her personal statement in the form of prose, poetry, or both. In some cases, Cordelle provides the text or supplements it with his own observations. Many of the participants share their pain and joys. You will find the insecure, the joyful (a pregnant mother stands out here), cutters, cancer survivors, rape and abuse survivors, and many others from various races and walks of life. The pictures are certainly worth more than a thousand words, and the personal statements provide important context for the scars, tears, smiles, and sometimes amusing facial expressions and body language seen therein. The most moving photographic journey I've encountered

I went to Frank Cordelle's exhibit in my hometown with more than a touch of skepticism- a man photographing females nude? Expecting to see Playboy (and worse) I was never so grateful to be wrong. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, rape and anorexia. What I saw in these photos brought me a sense of community among women and a decidedly human view of who and what we are. Frank shows an innate respect and understanding of these women. No pity, no pedestals and no pretense. Real females at all stages of life brave enough to show the rest of us who they are- who WE are. Sometimes sad, sometimes angry, sometimes hurt, sometimes weak,sometimes funny and sometimes strong. I have the book and have shown it to many people now. Each and every one came away from the experience with alot to think about. My 12 year old "step daughter" spent a couple of hours poring over the photos and reading about the women. She immediately "got it" that this book is about the real beauty within us all. This book is the antidote to all of the airbrushed perfectionism expected of women in our culture. If you are a woman, this is what you need to see. If you are a man, this book will give you an insight never before shown about women.

Something everyone should see and read

This project is of such importance that I can't believe it's received such a lack of publicity. Cordelle's 25 year journey has brought life to so many people, it's a shame more people haven't seen it. The fact that it's taken him so long to get this work published just goes to show how far American society has to go in terms of people being accepted as they are and feeling comfortable with who they are and what they look like and not feeling like they have to compare themselves to the images of thin people we see everyday on magazines and in the media in general.

This book includes a fourth profile. In NLP terms, it is known as Auditory Digital (Ad). In this text, to better describe what's happening, I call it Internal Dialogue (Id). That also avoids confusion with ADD, a term not commonly known when NLP was originally developed. The full VAK-Id model is quite detailed, so in this book I will provide just a brief overview. Please keep in mind that, as with other models, all of us possess varying mixtures of all profiles.

Knowing how these styles differ can help you put your ideas across more clearly, and give your point of view greater acceptance. As well, you'll have a better handle on the messages people are sending and saying to you. It just makes sense to learn and use these skills.

About the Author
Born in England and raised near Montreal, Brian Walsh was a journalist and broadcaster before joining a major international firm. For much of his thirty-year career he was involved in human resources, specifically staff training.�While living in the Canadian Arctic, Brian served as a Justice of the Peace, and studied Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and anthropology. Those experiences and extensive international travel prepared him for working with other cultures. He was then transferred to China where he served as his company's General Manager.After his return to Canada, he elected early retirement to further his earlier interest in NLP and hypnotherapy. He returned to formal study, and within four years had achieved his PhD.�His dissertation, which focused on accelerated learning techniques, inspired his passion and his bestselling book, Unleashing Your Brilliance.�Brian is dedicated to personal growth and enrichment through his articles, webinars, workshops, and audio / video products. Unexpected but appreciated information

The book is short, focused and concise. One doesn't have to dig for information; the information is readily available and easy to understand. On first read, the book seems to be the same ole, same ole, but it isn't. I really appreciated the added detail of the "words and phrases they use" and the "these communicators" listed under characteristics of each learning style. The sections titled "best practices for learning" were, also, very helpful.

Short, direct, and to-the-point, this self-audit will start you on the path to learning more about yourself, others, and how the world works with the Neurolinguistic Programming model. A Romance Junkie

Holy Cow! This book was just plain awful, I kept flicking chapters at the speed of light with my kindle. There was NO conflict what so ever in this book. Some external thing about their childhood, which they should have got over it with some therapy, crack, crystal meth, etc...
To upset me even further the book does not end!! It took me a week to read it because I would fall asleep after a few pages- I really should not complain, this book saved me soooooo much money. I usually read about seven books per week. It was just surprising that it was this bad because I love Penny Jordan's writing- sorry Penny, don't let them rush you. This book was so bad I refuse to buy the sequel, so unless it appears in my kindle by magic or free gift I'll just skip it. I gave this book two stars and it's over rated because I love Penny Jordan.

Frustrating

The Reluctant Surrender is the first book in the story of Giselle and Saul. The second book can be found under two different titles namely,: Giselle's Choice and The Dutiful Wife.

The rating I would give both books would not exceed a 3star, and that only because i admired the hero!! The stories in both books are quite straight forward: he likes her , he wants her , he takes her. She offers hardly any resistance, and the few times she tries, she soon gives up under the deluge of kisses.

I might understand if an author chooses to introduce a 'secret' way past halfway in a story, though I would not recommend it. I can also allow that it not be revealed nor solved in the first book, though I would suggest mentioning the existence of the second book, for the benefit of the reader, possible giving an preview of the second book.... What i cannot accept is that this blessed secret is constantly mentioned but never revealed. Even in the second book, you read ad nausea about the guilt Giselle feels but it is only at page 127 that one gets a glimpse of this secret!!! Calculating both books, having to read 318 pages before being told what this blessed secret is, well I think, that is stretching it a bit too far.

By the way, the secret is that Giselle's mother suffered of severe post partum depression and what was made believe a traffic accident , was in reality a suicide. The theme could have been a great book, giving insight to the problems arising out of this illness, however the topic was mishandled and the reader in his frustration, due to the repetitive pages, looses much of the interest. By the time Ms. Jordan decides to tell the reader what is really going on, she has already lost him!! I sincerely had higher expectations from Ms. Jordan

just okay

Giselle and Saul have a bad first meeting. She stole his spot, but only because of the way he looked at her. Then they discover they must work together. Yet Saul has to get a bit childish and remove her car from the spot – still not sure how that can be considered okay. He doesn’t really want to work w/ her either and questions her abilities later on. Giselle comes across as a fairly strong woman early on and Saul feels the need to bring her under some. Saul decides to use Giselle to deflect the unwanted attentions of his cousin’s tool shed wife – why in the world this alpha male couldn’t spell NO to her is beyond me! They soon fall in love, and neither of them want children because of their own childhood. Sounds good! They laid those cards on the table early on. Giselle explains her childhood tragedy to Saul but she leaves out a key ingredient. However, as the reader you don’t get that until the epilogue which should close up a story, but this one invites the opportunity for a sequel. At least, Saul and Giselle seem to have a strong foundation for a HEA in this story so what could possibly go wrong?
