"This wacky, charming novel...draws you in with humor, then turns out to contain both a suspenseful subplot and a sweet romance….Hilarious and moving."—People

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

Review
"Simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking. . . Eleanor Oliphant may be completely fine, but this book is completely wonderful." --PureWow

"Eleanor Oliphant is a truly original literary creation: funny, touching, and unpredictable. Her journey out of dark shadows is expertly woven and absolutely gripping." --Jojo Moyes, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Me Before You

"This wacky, charming novel...draws you in with humor, then turns out to contain both a suspenseful subplot and a sweet romance….Hilarious and moving."--People

“A charmer...satisfyingly quirky.”--Janet Maslin, The New York Times “Books to Breeze Through This Summer”

“Move over, Ove (in Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove)—there’s a new curmudgeon to love. . . Walking in Eleanor’s practical black Velcro shoes is delightfully amusing, her prudish observations leavened with a privately puckish humor. But readers will also be drawn in by her tragic backstory, which slowly reveals how she came to be so entirely Eleanor. Witty, charming, and heartwarming, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is a remarkable debut about a singular woman. Readers will cheer Eleanor as she confronts her dark past and turns to a brighter future. Feel good without feeling smarmy.” –Booklist (starred review)

"Deeply compelling" --Vox

“Eleanor Oliphant is endearing, [a] whip-smart read. . .  Perfectly paced, odd, shocking and hilarious, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is a fascinating story about loneliness, hope, tragedy and humanity. Honeyman’s delivery is wickedly good, and Eleanor won’t leave you anytime soon." --Associated Press

"Honeyman’s endearing debut is part comic novel, part emotional thriller, and part love story. . . hilarious, deadpan, and irresistible." --Kirkus Reviews

“[A] captivating debut. . . a feel-good story that will make readers laugh and cheer for Eleanor as she learns that the past doesn’t dictate the future, and that happiness can be hers. This is a must-read for those who love characters with quirks.” --BookPage

“If you thought Fredrik Backman’s Ove was a charming curmudgeon, you’ll instantly fall for Eleanor.” --Hello Giggles

"The book is wonderfully, quirkily funny. You both ache for Eleanor. . . and laugh with her." --Seattle Times

“That Eleanor's social awkwardness is extreme, sometimes painfully and often comically so, is far more apparent to the reader than it is to Eleanor herself — and that we get this through Eleanor's own narration is a credit to the author's cleverness and craft. . . A touching, funny novel." --Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Debut author Honeyman expertly captures a woman whose inner pain is excruciating and whose face and heart are scarred, but who still holds the capacity to love and be loved. Eleanor’s story will move readers." --Publishers Weekly

“[Eleanor Oliphant] happens to be among the most compelling and complex characters drawn in recent memory, one who is always peculiar, often infuriating, but funny and utterly endearing.” --The National (Scotland)

"Gail Honeyman’s wonderful debut novel hits the summer read sweet spot: an intelligent, complex, funny, heartbreaking book that you’ll want to read in a single sitting.” –The Irish Times

“Heart-wrenching yet humorous; dark yet full of life—the debut novel from this Glasgow-based author is nothing short of extraordinary. This is a story… that everyone will be talking about this summer.” --Hello Canada, June 2017

“Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is filled with laughter and hope, and has such faith in the power of love and friendship to rescue even the most damaged individuals.” -- Georgia Costal Illustrated

"Like a contemporary Jane Eyre, Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant is a woman scarred by profound loneliness, and the shadow of a harrowing childhood she can't even bear to remember. Bit by bit, and with extraordinary courage, however, Eleanor begins peeling the layers of protective numbness, letting others near for the first time, and reaching for the life she hasn't believed she deserves. Deft, compassionate and deeply moving--Honeyman's debut will have you rooting for Eleanor with every turning page. I loved this story." --Paula McClain, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Wife and Circling the Sun

"So powerful--I completely loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine." --Fiona Barton, New York Times bestselling author of The Widow

"Moving, hilarious, and intriguing, just like its unique, anti-social, anti-heroine. You will fall in love with Eleanor Oliphant." --J. Ryan Stradal, New York Times bestselling author of Kitchens of the Great Midwest

"Honeyman's debut is a stunner, as buoyant and charming as it is heartwrenching and emotionally sophisticated. Poor Eleanor Oliphant--often clueless, at times maddening, but always fascinating--walks right off the page and into the reader's heart. Not only is Eleanor Oliphant completely fine, she's a revelation." --Jonathan Evison, author of This Is Your Life, Harriet Chance

“Eleanor Oliphant endears herself to the reader with her cantankerous charm and her disarmingly inscrutable voice. A compulsive, irresistible narrative that arcs toward compassion and light.” –Mona Awad, author of 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl

“Heart-wrenching and wonderful!” –Nina Stibbe, bestselling author of Paradise Lodge

When people ask me what I do—taxi drivers, hairdressers—I tell them I work in an office. In almost eight years, no one’s ever asked what kind of office, or what sort of job I do there. I can’t decide whether that’s because I fit perfectly with their idea of what an office worker looks like, or whether people hear the phrase work in an office and automatically fill in the blanks themselves—lady doing photocopying, man tapping at a keyboard. I’m not complaining. I’m delighted that I don’t have to get into the fascinating intricacies of accounts receivable with them. When I first started working here, whenever anyone asked, I told them that I worked for a graphic design company, but then they assumed I was a creative type. It became a bit boring to see their faces blank over when I explained that it was back office stuff, that I didn’t get to use the fine‑tipped pens and the fancy software.

I’m nearly thirty years old now and I’ve been working here since I was twenty‑one. Bob, the owner, took me on not long after the office opened. I suppose he felt sorry for me. I had a degree in Classics and no work experience to speak of, and I turned up for the interview with a black eye, a couple of missing teeth and a broken arm. Maybe he sensed, back then, that I would never aspire to anything more than a poorly paid office job, that I would be content to stay with the company and save him the bother of ever having to recruit a replacement. Perhaps he could also tell that I’d never need to take time off to go on honeymoon, or request maternity leave. I don’t know.

It's definitely a two-tier system in the office; the creatives are the film stars, the rest of us merely supporting artists. You can tell by looking at us which category we fall into. To be fair, part of that is salary elated. The back office staff get paid a pittance, and so we can't afford much in the way of sharp haircuts and nerdy glasses. Clothes, music, gadgets-although the designers are desperate to be seen as freethinkers with unique ideas, they all adhere to a strict uniform.

Graphic design is of no interest to me. I'm a finance clerk. I could be issuing invoices for anything, really; armaments, Rohypnol, coconuts.

From Monday to Friday, I come in at 8.30. I take an hour for lunch. I used to bring in my own sandwiches, but the food at home always went off before I could use it up, so now I get something from the high street. I always finish with a trip to Marks & Spencer on a Friday, which rounds off the week nicely. I sit in the staffroom with my sandwich and I read the newspaper from cover to cover, and then do the crosswords. I take the Daily Telegraph, not because I like it particularly, but because it has the best cryptic crossword. I don't talk to anyone–by the time I've bought my meal deal, read the paper and finished both crosswords, the hour is almost up. I go back to my desk and work till 5.30. The bus home takes half an hour.

I make supper and eat it while I listen to the Archers. I usually have pasta with pesto and salad–one pan and one plate. My childhood was full of culinary contradiction, and I've dined on both hand-dived scallops and boil-in-the-bag cod over the years. After much reflection on the political and sociological aspects of the table, I have realized that I am completely uninterested in food. My preference is for fodder hat is cheap, quick and simple to procure and prepare, whilst providing the requisite nutrients to enable a person to stay alive.

After I've washed up, I read a book, or sometimes I watch television if there's a program the Telegraph has recommended that day. I usually (well, always) talk to Mummy on a Wednesday evening for ten minutes or so. I go to bed around ten, read for half an hour and then put the light out. I don’t have trouble sleeping, as a rule.

On Fridays, I don’t get the bus straight after work but instead I go to the Tesco Metro around the corner from the office and buy a margherita pizza, some Chianti and two big bottles of Glen’s vodka. When I get home, I eat the pizza and drink the wine. I have some vodka afterward. I don’t need much on a Friday, just a few big swigs. I usually wake up on the sofa around 3 a.m., and I stumble off to bed. I drink the rest of the vodka over the weekend, spread it throughout both days so that I’m neither drunk nor sober. Monday takes a long time to come around.

My phone doesn’t ring often—it makes me jump when it does—and it’s usually people asking if I’ve been mis‑sold Payment Protection Insurance. I whisper I know where you live to them, and hang up the phone very, very gently. No one’s been in my flat this year apart from service professionals; I’ve not voluntarily invited another human being across the threshold, except to read the meter. You’d think that would be impossible, wouldn’t you? It’s true, though. I do exist, don’t I? It often feels as if I’m not here, that I’m a figment of my own imagination. There are days when I feel so lightly connected to the earth that the threads that tether me to the planet are gossamer thin, spun sugar. A strong gust of wind could dislodge me completely, and I’d lift off and blow away, like one of those seeds in a dandelion clock.

The threads tighten slightly from Monday to Friday. People phone the office to discuss credit lines, send me emails about contracts and estimates. The employees I share an office with—Janey, Loretta, Bernadette and Billy—would notice if I didn’t turn up. After a few days (I’ve often wondered how many) they would worry that I hadn’t phoned in sick—so unlike me—and they’d dig out my address from the personnel files. I suppose they’d call the police in the end, wouldn’t they? Would the officers break down the front door? Find me, covering their faces, gagging at the smell? That would give them something to talk about in the office. They hate me, but they don't actually wish me dead. I don't think so, anyway.

I went to the doctor yesterday. It feels like eons ago. I got the young doctor this time, the pale chap with the red hair, which I was pleased about. The younger they are, the more recent their training, and that can only be a good thing. I hate it when I get old Dr. Wilson; she's about sixty, and I can't imagine she knows much about the latest drugs and medical breakthroughs. She can barely work the computer.

The doctor was doing that thing where they talk to you but don't look at you, reading my notes on the screen, hitting the return key with increasing ferocity as he scrolled down.

"What can I do for you this time, Miss Oliphant?"

"It's back pain, Doctor," I told him. "I've been in agony." He still didn't look at me.

"How long have you been experiencing this?" he said.

"A couple of weeks," I told him.

He nodded.

"I think I know what's causing it," I said, "but I wanted to get your opinion."

He stopped reading, finally looked across at me.

"What is it that you think is causing your back pain, Miss Oliphant?"

"I think it's my breasts, Doctor," I told him.

"Your breasts?"

"Yes," I said. "You see, I've weighed them, and they're almost half a stone-combined weight, that is, not each!" I laughed. He stared at me, not laughing. "That's a lot of weight to carry around, isn't it?" I asked him. "I mean, if I were to strap half a stone of additional flesh to your chest and force you to walk around all day like that, your back would hurt too, wouldn't it?"

He stared at me, then cleared his throat.

A Stunning First Novel
By Bogopea
There has been a wonderful glut recently of captivating book titles featuring quirky characters (A MAN CALLED OVE, THE CURIOUS CHARM OF ARTHUR PEPPER, LILLIAN BOXFISH TAKES A WALK, BRITT MARIE WAS HERE), a lot of which are of a similar genre that I love. Now I can add Eleanor Oliphant to that list. Her name got my attention first but the story proved addictive. A 30 year old woman who faced terrible adversities up until her university graduation. She found a job and regulated her life in a way that allowed her to exist. But not live. She didn't know how. There is dialogue between characters but the most insightful parts are when we are reading Eleanor's thoughts and see how, as the plot unfolds, she is faced with decisions and choices that upend her very existence. I can't say more or I'll spoil it for you. It is endearing, sad, wry, funny. And so much more. A stunning first novel by Gail Honeyman.

You will fall in love with Miss Oliphant
By Mary Ward
Eleanor Oliphant is one of the most interesting characters that I have read in a while. She is blunt. Very blunt. She lacks social skills and tends to spout off facts to people just having conversations. She likes her routine. Every Friday, stop and buy pizza and vodka. And every Wednesday, she talks to her mother. Those are never very good for Eleanor. Her mother is mean and angry and leaves her feeling less than. Something happened to Eleanor when she was a child. Something that left her with a scar on her face and moving from foster home to foster home. Does she remember it all or is it her coping mechanism? Things start to change in her life when her company’s IT guy, Raymond, and Eleanor help an old man who has passed out in the street. Family is the one thing that she has been missing.

There is so much to Eleanor. In the beginning, I thought that I didn’t care too much for her but as time went on and she opened up, well, I fell in love with her. I would venture to say that she is on the autism spectrum. What a sad story she had lived and what a wonderful world opening up for her. Beautifully written and just a lovely story, you will fall in love with Eleanor too.

Page Turner
By lindsay
I loved this book. Completely different than I expected, but in a refreshing way. I hate reading reviews that give everything away, so as a heads up, there are no spoilers here.

For whatever reason, even amidst all the rave reviews, I thought the book might be odd or boring; a whole book about a quirky woman, I thought how could this be so wonderful? However, it is so much more than that. It has in depth portrayal of a woman and her past and how she has come to be who she is. It details her struggles with a hurtful past, and as the story develops, so does our heroine. She begins to look at things in a new light, and grows into this beautiful strong and brave person. You want to applaud her in the end and give her a hug.

This is an intelligent and beautifully written story, a definite page turner. I highly recommend.

Monte Carlo Methods, by Malvin H. Kalos, Paula A. Whitlock

This introduction to Monte Carlo methods seeks to identify and study the unifying elements that underlie their effective application. Initial chapters provide a short treatment of the probability and statistics needed as background, enabling those without experience in Monte Carlo techniques to apply these ideas to their research.
The book focuses on two basic themes: The first is the importance of random walks as they occur both in natural stochastic systems and in their relationship to integral and differential equations. The second theme is that of variance reduction in general and importance sampling in particular as a technique for efficient use of the methods. Random walks are introduced with an elementary example in which the modeling of radiation transport arises directly from a schematic probabilistic description of the interaction of radiation with matter. Building on this example, the relationship between random walks and integral equations is outlined. The applicability of these ideas to other problems is shown by a clear and elementary introduction to the solution of the Schr?dinger equation by random walks.
The text includes sample problems that readers can solve by themselves to illustrate the content of each chapter.

This is the second, completely revised and extended edition of the successful monograph, which brings the treatment up to date and incorporates the many advances in Monte Carlo techniques and their applications, while retaining the original elementary but general approach.

Fantastic Book on Sustainable Schools
By nic
I've been interested in sustainable architecture specifically focused on schools for some time but did not, until now, come across a book that covered this topic. This book is superb - it is filled with actual schools, specific examples, that exemplify all the ideas that the authors describe in the text. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in finding out more about how the issue of sustainability can drive the future of school architecture and, in turn, the learning environment that such architecture fosters.

Sustainable Schools a must read!
By Smoove L.
"Sustainable School Architecture: Design for Elementary and Secondary Schools" is an important book. An important book for not just architects of schools, but for all architects and those interested in the sustainable issues our country is now confronting.

Author Lisa Gelfand uses a holistic approach to describe the different ways to make greener, more efficient, and, in the end, better environments for learning. Every sustainable element is thoroughly described and backed up with numerous examples. More often than not, the solutions offered in this book are not overly complex or "Swiss-watchy", but are often practical, thrifty, and easy to implement. This is an especially salient when working with a client who is afraid that a sustainable architecture will make their building not affordable.

In my professional experience, there exists a pandemonium of a buzzwords in the design business, "green" and "sustainable" are frequently used but not accurately followed through into reality. Lisa Gelfand has made real a thoughtful and well-researched approach to sustainable school design. She is truly a leader in her field.

Cracking the Sales Management Code: The Secrets to Measuring and Managing Sales Performance, by Jason Jordan, Michelle Vazzana

Cracking the Sales Management Code is a groundbreaking book for sales managers and executives who want greater control over sales performance. Based on new research into how world-class sales forces measure and manage their sellers, it provides a best practice approach to identify and implement the critical activities and metrics that drive business results. It is not a book on organizational leadership, nor is it a book on interpersonal coaching. It is a book on how to effectively manage a sales force.

Neil Rackham (bestselling author of SPIN Selling) states in his foreword, "There's an acute shortage of good books on the specifics of sales management. Cracking the Sales Management Code is about the practical specifics of sales management in the new era, and it fills a void."

This book is effectively an operating manual for the sales force. It identifies the 5 fundamental sales processes that can be managed to create desired business outcomes, and it helps readers choose which of the processes are needed to achieve their own strategic objectives. It also provides examples of actual tools and frameworks for sales managers to use, and it gives straight-forward advice on how to change sales force behaviors while avoiding common pitfalls. This book will further help sales forces maximize the usefulness of CRM by defining 3 distinct levels of sales metrics - those you can directly manage, those you can influence, and those that you can only hope to change.

Cracking the Sales Management Code is written in an engaging and narrative way that brings to life the extensive research and practical insights contained within its pages. It is a must-read for anyone in sales management or sales operations who wants to clarify the task of sales management and put in place the strategies, processes, tools, and metrics to proactively manage sales performance.

From the Inside Flap
There are literally thousands of books on selling, coaching, and leadership, but what about the particulars of managing a sales force. Where are the frameworks, metrics, and best practices to help you succeed?

Based on extensive research into how world-class companies measure and manage their sales forces, Cracking the Sales Management Code is the first operating manual for sales management. In it you will discover:

  • The 5 critical processes that drive sales performance
  • How to choose the right processes for your own team
  • The 3 levels of sales metrics you must collect
  • Which metrics you can 'manage' and which you can't
  • How to prioritize conflicting sales objectives
  • How to align seller activities with business results
  • How to use CRM to improve the impact of coaching
As Neil Rackham writes in the foreword: "There's an acute shortage of good books on the specifics of sales management. Cracking the Sales Management Code is about the practical specifics of sales management in the new era, and it fills a void."

Cracking the Sales Management Code fills that void by providing foundational knowledge about how the sales force works. It reveals the gears and levers that actually control sales results. It will add clarity to things that you intuitively know and provide insight into things that you don't. It will change the way you manage your sellers from day to day, as well as the results you get from year to year.

From the Back Cover
"There's an acute shortage of good books on the specifics of sales management. Cracking the Sales Management Code is about the practical specifics of sales management in the new era, and it fills a void."
From the Foreword by Neil Rackham

"Sales may be an art, but sales management is a science. Cracking the Sales Management Code reveals that science and gives practical steps to identify the metrics you must measure to manage toward success."
Arthur Dorfman, National Vice President, SAP

"There are things that can be managed in a sales force, and there are things that cannot. Too often sales management doesn't see the difference. This book is invaluable because it reveals the manageableactivities that actually drive sales results."
John Davis, Vice President, St. Jude Medical

"The authors correctly assert that the proliferation of management reporting has created a false sense of control for sales executives. Real control is derived from clear direction to the field, and this book tells how do to that in an easy-to understand, actionable manner."
Michael R. Jenkins, Signature Client Vice President, AT&T Global Enterprise Solutions

"When it comes to sales management, there is very little innovative thinking on the topic. Cracking the Sales Management Code is a must-read for anyone wanting to bring their sales management team into the 21st century."
Mike Nathe, Senior Vice President, Essilor Laboratories of America

"Cracking the Sales Management Code is one of the most important resources available on effective sales management. Its clear, credible, and reasoned insights provide a compelling blueprint for sales force improvement, and should be required reading for every sales leader."
Bob Kelly, Chairman, The Sales Management Association

"Sales management too often equates measuring sales performance with managing it. This book cleverly pulls the two apart and illustrates how to manage the activities that lead to desired outcomes. The result is a must-read for managers who want to focus their attention to have a greater impact on sales force performance."
James Lattin, Robert A. Magowan Professor of Marketing, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University

Crack the Code | Grow Your Company
By Mike Kunkle
I read a lot of books. It used to be about 50 a year, but now I read a lot more summaries and fewer full books, cover to cover. I especially read books about business, sales, training, organization development and performance improvement. I say that as a precursor to my statement that Jason Jordan and Michelle Vazzana's book, "Cracking The Sales Management Code" is one I read cover to cover recently and it is currently one of my top three choices for books on sales management and sales performance improvement. Frankly, I wish I had written it.

I could cite endless examples why, and will share a few, but the primary reason is the message they deliver about the under-developed yet critical sales function ("under-developed" is my term, meaning that the management model and business practices haven't evolved and matured to the degree that other disciplines have), and the largely overlooked and mismanaged role of frontline sales manager. It mirrors much of my own experiences over the past 25 years and I often found myself nodding my head or cheering to myself at many parts of the book.

Think those are some strong statements? Ask yourself these questions:
- What criteria is used in most organizations for promotion from sales rep to sales manager? (Most often, it's great sales results with the very best sales reps being promoted into roles for which they don't have the competencies.)
- How often do sales managers receive practical, helpful training and reinforcement on how to be a great sales manager?
- What training do most sales managers receive on interpreting selection assessments, conducting behavioral interviews, running and judging sales simulations, or utilizing other great hiring/selection methods?
- When was the last time you saw sales managers trained on exactly what their reps were being trained on, before the reps were trained?
- How do you use sales managers to reinforce and support rep training, to ensure new skills transfer from the learning environment to the real-world?
- What training exists to help new sales managers read and diagnose organizational reporting, to understand what activity or skills gaps might exist in their reps/team?
- How are most sales managers taught to diagnose the root causes of underperformance, once the reporting highlights an issue, and to close the gap and solve the root cause?
- What diagnostic or coaching models are commonly taught to sales managers? And are those same models used in their development as well?

Sure, some organizations have great answers to these questions. But let's be honest... many don't. What's odd and sad, is that when you discuss these things around a conference table, everyone always nods their head, like they're great ideas. But so few seem to be executing well to elevate the role of sales manager and drive growth through them. In the book, one of the headings says it very plainly. "It's the Sales Manager, Stupid." Frontline sales managers are the key to real sales performance growth and rep success. Cracking this code, for your organization, is simply vital to maximizing sales efforts.

In the rest of the book, the authors take you on the journey they made while cracking the code through their research and work with clients. Their cogent explanation and differentiation between Business Results, Sales Objectives and Sales Activities made me cheer. Their Building Blocks of Control laid the foundation for the oft-cited but rarely-implemented "accountability." Their Troubleshooting Guide is a great job aid/performance support tool to help you keep in all in mind. And the book contains one the best collection of possible sales metrics, organized by type, that I've seen in print. I truly enjoyed this one and recommend it highly.

I should also offer that the forward by Neil Rackham, while only a handful of pages, is worth the price of the book, in itself. This is not to diminish the detailed, clear and insightful work of the authors, but Rackham added some great value and clarity, right out of the box. The authors continued that trend, straight to the end.

Buy the book and read it. You won't regret it. And use it as the fuel to start a relentless focus on building logical and data-driven methods, systems, processes, resources and tools to develop and support sales management, to drive growth and sales success in your organization. Crack the code, and grow your company. It's the Sales Manager, Stupid. ;-)

A great addition to sales literature
By Craig Waldon
The authors make a comment on the last page that they find some people don't make it to the end of a management book because the key concepts can be gleamed from the first few chapters. And I have certainly found that to be the case with other sales and management books. They are also often hard to read and easy to put down and then you move on.

Cracking the Sales Management Code was not like that and I suppose the main reason I kept reading was it was putting into words the nagging feeling I had about managing sales people but never really found the time to analyse. The authors then provided a solid and well thought through structure to use when managing a sales team in a well worded easy to read manner with lots of good examples of their theory in practice.

It's a well written book and definitely worth the read for Sales Managers and Company Executives. The only people I won't recommend it to are my competitors!

The first REAL systematic approach to Sales Management
By Malte Holm
After months of searching for a solid way to measure and manage sales performance we finally found "Cracking the Sales Management Code". The book is based on the author's extensive research and reveals a new framework for how to make sure your sales performance is trimmed and delivering the results the company is looking for.

The authors take us through three categories of metrics; Results, Objective and Activities. Far to often we as companies focus on the top- and bottomline (eg. hit sales quota of $2MM this year) and start looking for ways to tell our salespeople how to do this (sometimes just as "best of luck - let me know if you need anything" or "you need to make more cales this week!"). However the authors tell us that we must not forget to determine the Objectives (the "how are we going to get the results", as for example "more repeat customers", "more referrals", "focusing on Fortune 100 companies only") to understand what Activities will lead us to these, and further on to reach our business Results. The point is to manage what can really be managed and the authors show us that only the Activities can really be managed which is why we need to make sure we're doing the right thing.

The framework is solid and gives the sales manager a new approach as for how to think about managing reps. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone in sales (from the seasoned manager/director to sales reps) to understand how to measure the right things and make sure you're not trying to manage stuff that can't really be managed.
