This book offers a new argument for the ancient claim that well-being as the highest prudential good -- eudaimonia -- consists of happiness in a virtuous life. The argument takes into account recent work on happiness, well-being, and virtue, and defends a neo-Aristotelian conception of virtue as an integrated intellectual-emotional disposition that is limited in both scope and stability. This conception of virtue is argued to be widely-held and compatible with social and cognitive psychology.

The main argument of the book is as follows: (i) the concept of well-being as the highest prudential good is internally coherent and widely held; (ii) well-being conceived thus requires an objectively worthwhile life; (iii) in turn, such a life requires autonomy and reality-orientation, i.e., a disposition to think for oneself, seek truth or understanding about important aspects of one's own life and human life in general, and act on this understanding when circumstances permit; (iv) to the extent that someone is successful in achieving understanding and acting on it, she is realistic, and to the extent that she is realistic, she is virtuous; (v) hence, well-being as the highest prudential good requires virtue. But complete virtue is impossible for both psychological and epistemic reasons, and this is one reason why complete well-being is impossible.

About the Author

Neera K. Badhwar is Professor Emerita of Philosophy at the University of Oklahoma and is affiliated with the Departments of Philosophy and Economics at George Mason University. She has published articles on friendship, virtue, self-interest, market societies, and other topics in ethics and social-political philosophy in such journals as Ethics, Journal of Philosophy, Nous, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Social Philosophy and Policy, and Politics, Philosophy & Economics. She is also the editor of Friendship: A Philosophical Reader (Cornell University Press).

Well-Being, Living Virtuously and Individual Flourishing

I highly recommend this book for those interested in a realistic, objective account of human well-being – what it is, how virtue, happiness and character fit in, and providing much food for thought on how to think more deeply about one’s own life and happiness. It is clear that Neera Badhwar has thought deeply about well-being and what is entailed in living a truly worthwhile life. I really enjoyed reading this book and it has given me a lot to think about including a richer understanding of some very challenging issues.

Badhwar works in the Aristotelian tradition and sees well-being as “the individual’s highest prudential good” and virtue and virtuous actions as partly constitutive of well-being. Happiness is also partly constitutive of well-being and she notes that: “Happiness requires the disposition to enjoy life, to be and feel engaged with life, to look forward to the next hour and next day.” She believes that someone who leads an objectively worthwhile life “must be characteristically autonomous and reality oriented, that is, disposed to think for herself and seek truth or understanding about important aspects of her own life and human life in general, and disposed to act on her understanding when circumstances permit.”

One of the strengths of the book is the wide amount of material that the author draws upon to think deeply and clearly about human well-being. There are insights from philosophy, economics, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, art and literature, social science as well as some very good thought experiments. Badhwar also challenges some of the literature on optimism, realism and self-deception. This section is very compelling and she rightly concludes her analysis by saying: “Highly realistic people… are motivated to grow and change both by an awareness of their shortcomings, and by a desire to challenge themselves.”

The chapter on virtue is my favorite section of the book and it has given me a lot to think about. There are many valuable insights in the chapter but here are a few I found important and that I am continuing to think about:
• The importance of practical wisdom – very critical for how we apply virtue in the context of our individual lives
• The need for emotions in the ability to make decisions at all (citing the work of Antonio Damasio)
• “A virtuous or morally excellent act is an act that expresses a habituated intellectual-emotional disposition to make the right choice” and why they must be aimed at good ends as well
• A limited unity of virtue perspective versus a global unity of virtues perspective (and why the latter may be an aspirational ideal but not actually achievable for a variety of reasons explored in detail in the book)

Badhwar has a “crucial eudaimonistic premise that a defensible conception of virtue and of well-being must take into account the nature of human beings and the nature of the world they live in.” This is an excellent work that adheres to this premise and gives the reader a lot to think about concerning both human well-being generally as well as in the context of one’s own individual life.

An added benefit for me was the true enjoyment I received in actively engaging with this important work. I am currently re-reading the chapter on virtue and will continue to think about these ideas in the context of my own life. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of reading about and thinking through the ideas presented in this book - and that enjoyment is contributing to my life and well-being!
