Female Rebellion in Young Adult Dystopian Fiction (Ashgate Studies in Childhood, 1700 to the Present)From Routledge

Responding to the increasingly powerful presence of dystopian literature for young adults, this volume focuses on novels featuring a female protagonist who contends with societal and governmental threats at the same time that she is navigating the treacherous waters of young adulthood. The contributors relate the liminal nature of the female protagonist to liminality as a unifying feature of dystopian literature, literature for and about young women, and cultural expectations of adolescent womanhood. Divided into three sections, the collection investigates cultural assumptions and expectations of adolescent women, considers the various means of resistance and rebellion made available to and explored by female protagonists, and examines how the adolescent female protagonist is situated with respect to the groups and environments that surround her. In a series of thought-provoking essays on a wide range of writers that includes Libba Bray, Scott Westerfeld, Tahereh Mafi, Veronica Roth, Marissa Meyer, Ally Condie, and Suzanne Collins, the collection makes a convincing case for how this rebellious figure interrogates the competing constructions of adolescent womanhood in late-twentieth- and early twenty-first-century culture.

Review
'Female Rebellion in Young Adult Dystopian Fiction is an exciting addition to the increasingly intersecting interests of gender studies, YA literature, and dystopia. The writers ponder two vital questions: how do these recent popular YA dystopias explore gender, and how empowering are they for their young female readers? Their interesting arguments will certainly stimulate conversation about the value of dystopia to a young audience.' Elaine Ostry, SUNY, Plattsburgh, USA '... the collection makes a convincing case for how the rebellious female protagonist in YA dystopian fiction probes the differing presentations of adolescent womanhood in late-twentieth- and early twenty-first-century culture. ... Female Rebellion provides a noteworthy and substantial critical resource for YA dystopian fiction in particular and YA fiction in general.' Rocky Mountain Review '... all of the essays in the collection draw on contemporary scholarship in the field of young adult literature and offer excellent insight into what it means to be a rebellious teen girl in the dystopian future. ... it is an interesting and exciting addition to the Ashgate Studies in Childhood series and a supremely important work for this moment in the study of young adult literature.' Children's Literature Association Quarterly 'It is a valuable, original contribution to the field and represents some of the best thinking to date on dystopian heroines, the cultural background which informs and influences them and the very real stakes which underpin these highly popular, influential representations in YA literature today.' International Research in Children's Literature

Why the YA fascination with dystopia?
By K Cummings Pipes
I hope to post a more extensive review later. At this time, those wishing to see and sample the book need to be looking at the listing for the Kindle edition. The print version offers a standard library binding and lovely, heavy white pages; this book is a quality edition from Ashgate. I have read the introduction and the first two chapters and, seeing no other reviews as yet, I offer these comments hoping to help others decide whether to add this book to their collections. The answer is a definitive "yes!" for academic collections supporting interest and study in young adult literature, in feminism and gender studies, and in cultural and social issues of the 21st Century. The bibliographies as the end of each chapter are wide-ranging and of great interest.
"Introduction: From 'New Woman" to 'Future Girl': The Roots and Rise of the Female Protagonists in Contemporary Young Adult Dystopias" grounds this collection of papers in the literature and literary criticism of the 20th Century and in those as they are emerging after the first decade of the 21st. Quoting: "By presenting young women as agents of change, novels such as those discussed in this volume draw on the seemingly contradictory impulses of turn-of-the-century Western culture to understand young women as both strong and vulnerable, both passive citizens and potential leaders. However, it is important to note that these novels actually extend an existing, if subtler, tradition in young adult literature."
In chapter one, "Girl Power and Girl Activism in the Fiction of Suzanne Collins, Scott Westerfield, and Moira Young", Sony Sawyer Fritz "explores how much dystopian fiction's articulation of the adolescent girl as an empowered citizen and a heroic trailblazer has emerged as a trend in the past decade" and connects these ideas to the activism of real life girls "becoming aware of deep injustices in the wider world" (here she is quoting Philip Reeve) and "the development of a new era of feminism."
Miranda A. Green-Barteet begins the second chapter with Charlotte Bronte's "distinctly nineteenth-century heroine", Jane Eyre, to my great delight. "'I'm beginning to know who I am': The Rebellious Subjectivities of Katniss Everdeen and Tris Prior" is an informative and easily read discussion of these distinctly twenty-first-century heroines as they move toward "subjectivity and autonomy" empowering the YA readers to do likewise.
The rest of this slim volume is rich with promise. I am particularly looking forward to reading Sara K. Day's "Docile Bodies, Dangerous Bodies..." and Meghan Gilbert-Hickey's "Gender Rolls..." and Amy Montz's "Rebels in Dresses..." among the remaining chapters.
