Great characters!

I can't believe this book is out of print, and I can't believe it was published in the 1970's. I read it as part of a review I'm doing on gay and lesbian fiction for young adults, and it is definitely one of the best I've read. I was a little disappointed with the lukewarm ending, but over all, the book's vermisimilitude is very impressive, and the courage of its message is considerable considering its time. The characters are the most believable I've encountered in most YA literature.

70's setting, but timeless questions

This book was first published in 1978, which I didn't realize when I ordered it. It reminded me very much of books by Norma Klein, which I read growing up in the eighties (they also featured upper-crust Jewish teens who have interactions with liberal adults). However, it has aged gracefully, due to the fact that there are almost no pop culture references and the focus is on two adolescent girls' friendship and the narrator, Val's, confusion when she starts wondering if she feels anything more for her best friend, Chloe. The girls' activities: gossiping about classmates; hanging out in coffee shops and thrift stores; and indulging in minor adolescent mischief, are pretty much the kind of things teens have done for decades. Some of the attitudes could be described as dated, but I think that would depend on where you live.

Val and Chloe bond over being the new girls at their private single-sex school. They feel like outsiders among their debutante-to-be classmates, although gradually, they're revealed to be pretty well off. They both want to be artists when they grow up, and they both have a lot of curiosity about sex and romantic relationships. Over the course of the book (it's quite short), they will deal with the death of a loved one, attention from much older guys, and their mutual attraction. Val is lucky enough to have sympathetic adults to turn to, in order to help sort out her feelings, but she finds that they aren't as comfortable about giving her advice as she expected. In the end, it's up to her to decide what to do.

I really liked Val's relationship with her mom, though because of the time period, Mom is smoking like a chimney while she and Val have their heart-to-hearts. I thought the friendship, with all its ups and downs, was very believable. However, I was hoping for more of a plot; it seemed like things just randomly happened to the characters, rather than their having goals they wanted to accomplish. Also, while it was a relief not to have a "Mean Girls" character whose sole purpose is to make the protagonist miserable, it seemed odd not to portray the reaction to these two girls by their peers. Still, it was overall, a sweet book.

A Very Pivotal Book From My Adolescent Years

I was 15 when I first read this book (back in 1980) & it affected me very deeply. Until then I thought I was the only girl like me in the world & that I was somehow defective. Reading "Hey, Dollface" was a soul-satisfying revelation & gave me hope for my future. Truly, one of the ten most influential books of my life.

I would recommend this book to ANYONE

I started doing timeshare in January of 16... And had one week of training. I have been in sales for 16+ years, but trust me, timeshare is a total different animal. This book has helped me enormously. In my opinion, if companies really wanted you to be successful, they'd teach this book, for a mere minimum of three weeks, but they don't. You get one week and then it's game time. Not for the faint at heart, that's for sure.

I would recommend this book to ANYONE, NOT JUST THE BEGINNERS. It helps you to brush up on things.

This will be the best 20$ or less to help you make Thou$and$!!

Very good overview

I recently accepted a new position within my company that required that I be able to read blueprints, primarily mechanical. I haven't really done any training in that vein since I was in high school 24 years ago. This was a very good review that helped re-spark that interest and helped to bring back to my mind those things I had learned long ago.

Very Good book for orthopedics class and chiro boards

This was a recommended text in my chiropractic college for my orthopedics class. I found the illustrations very helpful with learning the orthopedic tests which seemed so overwhelming at first. I kept practicing these tests with my friends before the lab test and got good grades. The national boards do use this text as a reference, I highly recommend using this book to study for the boards for either Part II, III, or IV. For x-ray portions of boards -more so in Part III and IV---I highly recommend Skeletal Radiology by Terry Yochum. This is a definite must buy as well as Patrick Leonardi's National Board of Chiropractic Part II, Part III and Part IV study guides. The questions were great and helped me to concentrate on the important topics of high yield questions asked on the boards. Thanks Terry Yochum, Patrick Leonardi and Ronald Evans for making my life much easier in chiropractic school and on the boards.

Used for NBCE national boards

Would never have purchased this text if it were not for National boards. The DVD is very useful when reviewing Irene Gold review material. However, when you take part 4 you are not sure if the examiner is up on this text or some other. Numerous ortho exams are completely useless. And same-named ortho exams are taught/done differently depending on which text is used. Why NBCE, CCE, and the DC colleges are not on the same page is a mystery. I can only guess that it has to do more with money than with factual education.

I was taught from the Magee text. I'm not sure if I'll keep this text or resell it. I looked at this purchase as cheaper than repeating part 4.

Thumbs Up for Kindle

I've seen this little 180 pager going for almost 80 bucks US, so the natural two questions are:

1. Is it worth it?
2. What about Kindle?

Yes to 1, as it gives a really stripped down, very simplified intro that will help through a LOT of the more difficult aspects of the calculus of variations. The author jokes that even the most overused formulas for acceleration in physics texts use oversimplified accelerations in Cartesian planes to hide the fact that any real, generalized analytic solutions are actually all subsets of advanced Hamilton-Jacobi formulas! Other than the most basic, most motion formula problems actually require numeric rather than analytic methods.

For 2-- Great news. Although Kindle (and most e readers) slaughter LaTex, this little book on Kindle ROCKS. The publisher took the time and care to be sure the formulas and illustrations worked. Don't laugh, many do not do this! Yes, you have the minor hassle of a few e-page breaks where you have to go back and forth for an illustration, but the formulas are "blocked" so they are readable on every device I've tried, from my Android Note II to cloud/laptop and Kindle Fire. This is good news, because instead of making an $80 text $79 on Kindle like some publishers (grrrr), this sweet little text is about $13 on Kindle at this writing. Go for it!

The author recommends a LOT of other titles for the "full" story with more applications and advanced treatments-- but two to consider that are just awesome are:
Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics: Volume 1 and Hamiltonian and Lagrangian Dynamics: Volume 2.

A good reading on classical mechanics.

Some time ago, I had written a review about Analytical Mechanics by L.N. Hand and J.D. Finch saying that, although it contains the majority of the required material for a classical mechanics course, it is badly written and there is need for a well written textbook. The current book (published by the same publisher) fills this hole. It is indeed well written. It focuses on all fundamental concepts and constructions of classical mechanics and it does so in a concise way. As a result, students will find this book extremely valuable and, most probably, it will become of their favorite books. However, researchers or other people with good knowledge of the subject will not benefit from this book at all. Hence, the preamble to the title `A Student's Guide to' is right on target.

Trying to present the most essential ideas of the topic, the author has decided to exclude all standard applications such as scattering, central potentials, rigid body, chains of particles, small oscillations, etc. Hence, it cannot be considered a standard textbook and, on its own, it cannot serve as a standalone reading on classical mechanics. In addition, the effort to suppress the size of the book has resulted in not including many examples, solved problems and a thorough end-of-chapter list of problems.

Overall, it is a really good book and students should make it part of their recommended reading. However, they should still look for additional texts which include the topics omitted in this one.

Excellent text, but detailed solutions to the problem sets similar to those provided by Fleisch would be helpful.

This is an excellent text; the perfect resource for anyone attempting to follow Leonard Susskind's Opencourseware Stanford lectures on Classical Mechanics. The text provides much of the information that Susskind either assumes you know or skims over. (The lectures are wonderful, too.) My problem with this "Student's Guide" is that, unlike Daniel Fleisch's very fine Student's Guide to Vectors and Tensors and his even better Student's Guide to Maxwell's Equations, answers to the problems are provided, but not detailed solutions to problems are not. I have followed Feynman's recommendation to his sister when she did not understand certain aspects of physics to reread the text and retry the problems until you do. Still, Fleisch provided a web site which worked you through the solutions in a very thorough fashion. As no such web site or answer book is provided for with this text I sometimes find myself feeling a little like a fish out of water. Perhaps some kind graduate student of Dr. Hamill's could provide a resource similar to Fleisch's.

Taste of Home is published six times a year and has five sister magazines, Simple & Delicious, Slow Cooker, Appetizers, Cooking for 2, and Healthy Cooking.

good cookbook

This will be a gift (along with 2 other children's cookbooks and some kitchen utensils of his own) for the grandson who likes to cook. The recipes look good but not too complex for a 9 year old, lots of colorful pictures, and I like that there's a picture of a boy on the cover. Lots of children's cookbooks only show pictures of girls. He likes to cook but doesn't like 'girly' stuff. He plays hockey and baseball, his favorite color is camouflage. His parents (both mom and dad) are teaching him by example that cooking and cleaning aren't woman's work.

Actually the recipes in this cookbook look so good I'm considering ordering another one for myself.

Some of them are easy and I could assist them in making but for ...

I was expecting recipes that kids could do, but most of these I wouldn't expect my 12 year old to make. Some of them are easy and I could assist them in making but for the most part, I would make these and have my kids help me with some of it. And a lot of these recipes have special specific ingredients. A 3-ingredient banana pancake would be more appropriate. Not hand made, made from scratch, all organic and gluten free, free-range pancakes. I need a cookbook with easy recipes that my kids can take the wheel while I stand back and supervise. Pigs in a blanket. Different ways to make a pb&j. Kid recipes. Not a meatball casserole. I does get 3 stars because I make some of these recipes and they are pretty good. But it's not a kid cookbook.

I purchased this as a gift for my sister-in-law and nephew. The book has LOTS of pictures, and uses symbols to denote recipe difficulty (for young ones or older kids) as well as color coding for types of recipes (lunch, snacks, desserts, breakfasts, etc.) Very kid and Mom friendly - I love it so much I just may end up purchasing another for myself (and I don't consider myself much of a cook!)
