Review
“I love this book. It helps people to truly walk in someone else’s footprints. This guide will show beginning teachers and other professionals how to build successful relationships with their students' parents.”
(Natalie Marston, Principal 2011-10-21)

"If parents and professionals could wear out their shoes by dancing the way Fialka, Feldman, and Mikus describe it in this book, the shoes would indeed be worth pressing against one’s heart. Through stories, the authors expertly choreograph the steps families, professionals, and the children must take to foster this essential relationship―like a waltz: one, two, three." (Robin McWilliam, Director, Center for Child and Family Research 2011-10-21)

"This book beautifully reminds us that social change happens through listening, dialogue, and engagement. Beneath our roles as professionals and parents, these authors gently help us to remember that 'we are all people first,' and through empathy we can find ways to sidestep―or dance― around many of the missteps that lead to misunderstanding and conflict. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone trying to navigate the complexities of supporting and advocating for disabled students in inclusive classrooms." (Emma Van der Klift and Norman Kunc, Co- directors 2011-11-03)

“A mother who found her calling through fate or accident―and never looked away or glanced back―Janice Fialka is internationally renowned for her relentless, never-say-never advocacy. She and her coauthors offer hope and wisdom for parents who would see more clearly into the lives of their children―disabled or not―and for every professional who would engage them.” (Bill Ayers, Author, To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher and A Kind and Just Parent 2011-12-19)

“Rarely does a book hold such promise for promoting genuine partnerships between families of children with disabilities and the professionals who participate in their care. The real-life passages from the authors, seasoned parents, and experienced professionals infuse this work with unparalleled authenticity.” (Susan Addison, Special Educator, Retired 2011-12-19)

“The authors get right to the heart of parent-professional relationships. They deconstruct and reconstruct the difficult process of examining how parents and professionals communicate. The stories used to illustrate specific points are superb. We need this thoughtful and provoking perspective to encourage us to listen more closely to one another for the benefit our children.” (Martha E. Mock, Assistant Professor 2011-12-19)

“This book accomplishes two impressive feats. First: it conveys, through information and examples, research-based practices for building family-professional partnerships. Second: the clear, storytelling style of writing makes it impossible to put down. This is a must for anyone whose responsibilities involve working with the families of children with disabilities.” (Pamela J. Winton, Senior Scientist and Director of Outreach 2011-12-19)

“The authors powerfully illustrate the ‘dance of partnership’ in complex and nuanced ways. They capture how things are in the real world of relationships between parents and professionals. The stories are moving, the perspectives insightful, and practical strategies and suggestions abound. I recommend this book as a superb source of guidance and support.” (Shari Saunders, Clinical Associate Professor 2011-12-19)

“This is a book written with a quality that is both honest and sensitive. The authors force us to put aside all other issues, reminding us what is real and essential in our pursuit of genuine student learning.” (Georgina M. Terrigno, Speech and Language Pathologist 2011-12-19)

“Having attended many challenging problem-solving meetings, I know how important it is for families and professionals to keep open hearts and minds. This unique resource moves beyond the ‘how to’s’ of effective communication and reminds us of the values that are central to any great team―generosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn from one another.” (Paula Kluth, Consultant & Author, You’re Going to Love This Kid: Teaching Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom 2011-12-19)

“The authors capture the range of family and provider experiences, communication styles, and strategies that create effective partnerships. This book is a critically important read for families, providers, and especially for preservice students entering professions in which they will work with children and families.” (Beth Swedeen, Parent and Executive Director 2011-12-20)

“As I read this book, I realized that I kept switching back and forth from my ‘professional’ hat to my ‘parent’ hat. Helping us to switch hats is the real power of this work. The personal stories highlight well-documented themes in the literature on parent and professional perspectives. The strategies are practical and effective. This is a text I will revisit often.” (Dr. Julie Ricks-Doneen, Director, Lowry Center for Early Childhood Education 2011-12-20)

“This is a wonderful reference book to help parent and professionals ‘dance the dance’ together and avoid any missteps. The authors help readers understand the underlying thoughts of both the parent and the professional when they meet to set up a program. This is a sure read for both parents and education professionals.” (Filomena Bernatowicz, Teacher and member, Committee on Preschool Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors waltz us through steps to develop effective parent-professional partnerships using dance as a metaphor. When practiced by all participants in the dance, the result is mutual understanding and respect: the core of collaborative relationships. Theirs is a fresh approach to a much-discussed subject―a delightful invitation to dance.” (Elizabeth W. Bauer, Consultant 2011-12-20)

“In my 15 years of teaching, I have not come across a book that so eloquently describes the sensitive relationship between schools and parents as they navigate through the special education process. Using dancing as a metaphor for this delicate relationship, the authors provide an easy-to-read manual that perfectly compliments a college class or professional book study.” (Jennifer Grieco, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“This book’s valuable information and insights make it a ‘must read’ for everyone involved in the special education process. I will refer to this book frequently as it reminds me of the often unsaid feelings and concerns of parents. The authors provide numerous useful approaches so that all parties can collaborate and do what is best for the child.” (Jacqueline Rau, Fifth-Grade Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“Brilliantly written from the differing vantage points of both parents and professionals, this book shows how perceptions and assumptions can be falsely formed between ‘opponents.’ Use this knowledge to develop the strong partnerships necessary for parents and professionals to collaborate and support the needs of students!" (Kathy Brill, Board Member 2011-12-20)

“So often in special education, the people involved share the same goal, yet envision a different path to achieve that goal. The authors remind us that our ultimate goal is the same. They show us how, even in the most difficult situations, we can ‘dance’ together in successful collaboration.” (Tara Rounds, School Psychologist, CSE/CPSE Chairperson 2011-12-20)

“This book offers important suggestions for finding a way to dance together, reminding us exactly why we are dancing―for the child. I strongly recommend this text to parents and professionals. The real-life examples will help all parties understand and empathize with each other, making it that much easier to dance together.” (Jo Spahr, Parent of a special needs child, and IEP committee member 2011-12-20)

“The parent-professional relationship can be awkward, so using the metaphor of learning to dance together to benefit children is apt. With the resources to help children shrinking, it is more vital than ever for parents and professionals to forge strong partnerships. This perspective can really help―highly recommended.” (Robert A. Naseef, Author of Special Children, Challenged Parents 2011-12-20)

“The authors have done the near impossible―they have described the process of partnership in a way that is both easily accessible and incredibly nuanced. They provide a developmental roadmap and the concrete tools we need to make partnerships work. In this book, I have finally found the resource I need.” (Ethan Lowenstein, Associate Professor of Curriculum and Instruction 2011-12-20)

“The approach of this book is fresh, current and multifaceted without being complicated. The authors have skillfully woven multiple and complex family and professional perspectives into a well-integrated whole that is thoughtful, clear, and explicit. The material is relevant, useful, and extraordinarily helpful to a wide variety of dance partners.” (Camille Catlett, Scientist 2011-12-20)

“This book comes from the heart of an author who knows both sides. The content is relevant, immediately useful, and encourages us to think deeply about ourselves and how we can apply the information to make a difference―all evidence-based components of effective adult learning.” (Juliann Woods, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors never forget that it is all about the children/students with disabilities―so the adults just need to figure it out! They include many subtle examples of how inclusion can work throughout the book. An important take-away message is that becoming true partners takes time and is a process.” (Peggy A. Gallagher, Professor of Early Childhood Special Education 2011-12-20)

“The authors help readers understand that relationships are about human needs and feelings and that partnerships only develop to their potential when each party can both share and listen to content and facts as well as the needs and feelings of the other. This book is destined to be a classic. Give it to someone you care about; and read it yourself reflectively.” (Michael Peterson, Director 2011-12-20)

“The authors of this book offer a welcomed, kind and needed message for both professionals and parents: slow the pace, stop and listen. The authors know we build each partnership one at a time. This is a message we desperately need to get into higher education and professional development communities.” (Mary Jane Brotherson, Professor, Department of Human Development and Family Studies 2011-12-20)

“This book reminds teachers and professionals to include parents in the timeline of the special education process. The information that parents contribute and different perspective they provide can help us understand the whole child. As I finished this book, I developed a more open perspective to working with parents.” (Maura Crown, Special Education Teacher 2011-12-20)

“I will use this book as a key text in my courses that include the topics of collaborative teaching, home-school partnerships, and conflict mediation. What a great book for modeling for new teachers the realities of collaboration in the IEP process and the best practices that make the process a joyful dance rather than a difficult experience.” (Jacqueline Thousand, Professor 2011-12-20)

“Using understandable, jargon-free language, the authors help professionals and parents understand each others’ viewpoints. The text also provides practical tips and suggestions about how to work together collaboratively. I highly recommend this book for novice and veteran parents and professionals.” (Stephanie Smith Lee, Former Director, Office of Special Education Programs 2011-12-20)

“I found myself nodding in agreement with virtually all the points made in this book. The process is, indeed, a dance. Although one would think we have mastered dancing, each student, each family, each day brings forth a new dance. As partners and parents we need to tweak out that uniqueness in the child together.” (Jo-Anne Dobbins, Director of Pupil Personnel Services 2011-12-20)

“This book serves as a vital resource and provides essential viewpoints for professionals. The text also reminds parents how valuable their input is to the process. In the spirit of collaboration, we highly recommend this book.” (Tiiu Presutti, Special Education Teacher, Melinda Sulzbach, School Social Worker & Adrienne Hershfield, School Psychologist 2011-12-20)

Beautiful.
By Lee Ann Jung
It can be easy for professionals in special education to become lost in the sea of acronyms, legalese, and seemingly endless prescribed procedures for special education services. Fialka and her coauthors move us far beyond these procedural elements to refocus our attention on people and relationships. They offer brilliant guidance for navigating relationships as families and providers work together to support children. This will be required reading in my course on families in the future.

Working together for a special needs child
By Barbara Laird
I recommend this book to anyone faced with an IEP, or any situation where you need to understand and be understood to come to an agreement. The book deals with two parties who have the best interests of a special needs child, but come with different ideas on the best solution. Fialka and Feldman present many ideas, illustrated with interesting stories, on how to make the process go from awkward missteps to smoother dancing.

A must for Parents and Professional who believe in inclusion, democracy and the potential of all students
By Rich Feldman
For decades too many progressives educators and social justice activists have "forgotten" our children with disabilities. "Partnering for Children with Disabilities: A Dance that Matters" helps us listen to each other and learn from each other so a new vision of education emerges that respects the potential of all our children. This book will help all parents and professionals to listen, learn and create meaningful dialogue that will support our children who have disabilities.

Winner Culture, by Lars H Nielsen

A WINNER CULTURE IS WHEN SUCCESS TURNS INTO A HABIT This was ATP’s ambition and it worked. The results speak for themselves: In 2010 ATP was named the world’s best pension fund. A winner culture means delivering the out-of-the-ordinary top performance on a daily basis. It is a winner culture which enables competent organizations and teams to achieve success. For more than 20 years, Lars H. Nielsen has been helping to create winners in a large section of the Danish business sector. In addition to ATP he has cooperated with such organizations as Jyske Bank, Danfoss and PANDORA – and it is the creation of a firmly anchored winner culture in these companies that this book is all about. In this book, which is intended for the ambitious manager or staff member and is based on in-depth case studies, Lars H. Nielsen tells how it is possible to create a winner culture for any team or organization. Be inspired, create a winner culture and reach the optimum performance – not just once but again and again. “ THE BOOK SPARKS OFF A DEBATE WHICH COULD TURN THE CURRENT CULTURE OF CONTROL AND IN-FIGHTING INTO THE WINNER CULTURE OF THE FUTURE.” - Professor Tore Kristensen, Copenhagen Business School ” A WINNER CULTURE CAN BE CREATED. IN THIS BOOK LARS EXPLAINS HOW.” - Mads Rasmussen, Olympic Rowing Champion 2012 “A SUPERB INSIGHT INTO LARS’ METHODS AND TOOLS WHICH HAVE BEEN OF GREAT HELP NOT ONLY TO ME, IN MY CAREER, BUT TO ALL THE SENIOR MANAGEMENTS AND COMPANIES LARS HAS HELPED DEFINE THEIR VISION, CULTURE AND COOPERATION THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. THE BOOK IS RELEVANT FOR ALL THOSE INVOLVED IN BOTH BUSINESS AND SPORT – IN FACT, ALL THOSE WHO TAKE THEIR AMBITIONS SERIOUSLY.” - Torbjrn Sindballe, professional triathlete, 2 x World Champion and Hawaii ironman Bronze medalist “IT IS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING AND ACCESSIBLE MANAGEMENT BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ, AND IT IS DEFINITELY ON MY ALL-TIME TOP 10 ... AND, BELIEVE YOU ME, I HAVE READ MANY – REALLY MANY.” - HR Director Nordics Peter Haugaard Ernst & Young

If you can dream it.....
By Henrik BO
If you are looking for one book to read on how to create a performance culture in your organisation this is the one. It is a straight forward easy-to-read introduction, and the performance formula - P=SxC - is a real eye opener. The book is about being ambitious and how to turn the ambition into reality. As is said in the book: If you can dream it - you can do it (one might add...but it will take you a lot of hard work and commitment to get there). But then again if you want to play with the best - there is no short cuts. I highly recommend to spend some time with Lars and his book. It can chance your way of working....if you dare to dream!

A Winning Culture
By Leif Nygaard Eilertsen
The basic paragraph in Lars H. Nielsens book “Winner Culture” is really very simple: “You can plan your performances” – or as Lars writes: “Results cannot be planed – performances can”. Efter 35 years, where I have read many management-books, that were unable to establish their basic premise, this book come as a revelation.

My compressed summery does not do the author justice. In the role of athlete and coach over many years Lars has built the experience and the overview that lend credence to his statements. That happen through a number of fascinating and down-to-earth stories from “real life” (business life) which underlines the theories. One of these stories hit the mark – as an old triathlete:
The story on the English rower Steven Redgrave. The lesson was: “Focus where you have the most influence”. It may seem banal, but how many times have you been faced with an overwhelming problem? The difference on the result and the performance is, that the team has influence on the performance. The end result is outside their influence.

Results do not come out of nothing. Lars H. Nielsen state clearly that results require dedication. Results demand focus and effort – as in the world of sports. But because a culture is learned, it can be processed and shaped. As professor Tore Kristensen (CBS) have written: “…sound advice on how the individual can contribute to change the type of collaboration from counter-productive behavior to a winner culture.”.

In a sense ”Winner Culture” continues the thoughts which professor Steen Hildebrandt has been the spokesman for: Goal and success can only be achieves through respect, alignment and commitment rather than control and individualism.

What do you get? You will get a very will written book that will inspire you through your business life. You will also receive a lesson in the mentality that will build a winner culture – both within sports and business. I can only agree with Lars H. Nielsen when he states that we must replace a winner culture with the culture that is influenced by an interest with short-term gains.

Entropy Demystified: The Second Law Reduced to Plain Common Sense, by Arieh Ben-Naim

In this unique book, the reader is invited to experience the joy of appreciating something which has eluded understanding for many years - entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The book has a two-pronged message: first, that the second law is not infinitely incomprehensible as commonly stated in most textbooks on thermodynamics, but can, in fact, be comprehended through sheer common sense; and second, that entropy is not a mysterious quantity that has resisted understanding but a simple, familiar and easily comprehensible concept. Written in an accessible style, the book guides the reader through an abundance of dice games and examples from everyday life. The author paves the way for readers to discover for themselves what entropy is, how it changes, and, most importantly, why it always changes in one direction in a spontaneous process. In this new edition, seven simulated games are included so that the reader can actually experiment with the games described in the book. These simulated games are meant to enhance the readers' understanding and sense of joy upon discovering the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Basic
By Scott Davies
After seeing nothing but five-star reviews for this book, I figured I'd pick it up despite having little feel for what its target audience was since none of it was actually viewable on Amazon.

In a nutshell, this is very much a book for laymen. If you want an intuitive grasp of what entropy's about in the context of everyday physics without getting bogged down in math, then this may be a great book for you. The book uses as little math as possible in its explanations, and effectively assumes you're unfamiliar with or have forgotten high-school-level math operations such as factorials and logarithms. It manages to pound its point home reasonably well using lots and lots of fairly simple thought experiments that only differ from each other by little incremental steps.

On the other hand, if you already know anything at all about the information-theoretic formulation of entropy, already have an appreciation for the Law of Large Numbers, and have heard the words "macrostates" and "microstates" before, then there's nothing in this book you aren't likely to understand already. If you've taken a course on statistical mechanics and finished it without being horrendously confused, but maybe were hoping for a useful refresher on how different formulations of entropy are related, you should pass on this book. If you were hoping for illumination about the aspects of entropy that are actually at all "interesting" to modern physicists, such as black hole entropy (or the bizarre theories it's spawned such as the holographic principle), this is definitely not the book you're looking for.

Also, the book has no index. This is less annoying than it would be in a book that had more meat to it, but still, any 200+ page nonfiction book with no index should be taken out and shot as a matter of principle.

Another way to enjoy fundamental physics!
By Diego Casadei
Arieh Ben-Naim, professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, taught
thermodynamics and statistical mechanics for many years and is well
aware that students learn the second law but do not understand it,
simply because it can not be explained in the framework of classical
thermodynamics, in which it was first formulated by Lord Kelvin (i.e.
William Thomson, 1824-1907) and Rudolf Julius Emanuel Clausius
(1822-1888). Hence, this law and the connected concept of entropy are
usually surrounded by some mysterious halo: there is something (the
entropy), defined as the ratio between heat and temperature, that is
always increasing. The students not only do not understand _why_ it is
always increasing (it is left as a principle in classical
thermodynamics), but also ask themselves what is the _source_ of such
ever increasing quantity.

We feel comfortable with the first law, that is the principle of energy conservation, because our experience always
suggests that if we use some resource (the energy) to perform any work,
then we are left with less available energy for further tasks. The
first law simply tells us that the heat is
another form of energy so that nothing is actually lost, something which
we can accept without pain. In addition, the second law says that,
though the total energy is constant, we can not always recycle 100% of
it because there is a limit on the efficiency of conversion of heat into
work (the highest efficiency being given by the Carnot cycle, named
after Nicolas Lonard Sadi Carnot, 1796-1832). Again, we can accept it
quite easily, because it sounds natural, i.e. in accordance with our
common sense: we do not know any perpetual engine. But our daily
experience is not sufficient to make us understand what entropy is, and
why it must always increase.

The author shows that, if we identify the entropy with the concept of
"missing information" of the system at equilibrium, following the work
done by Claude Elwood Shannon (1916-2001) in 1948, we obtain a well
defined and (at least in principle) measurable quantity. This quantity,
apart from a multiplicative constant, has the same behavior as the
entropy: for every spontaneous process of an isolated system, it must
increase until the equilibrium state is reached. The missing
information, rather than the disorder (not being a well defined
quantity), is the key concept to understand the second law.

I should say here that the identity of entropy and missing
information is not a widespread idea among physicists, so that many
people may not appreciate this point. However, the arguments of this
book are quite convincing, and different opinions are also taken into
account and commented.

In addition, Ben-Naim thinks that the entropy should be taught as an
dimensionless quantity, being defined as the ratio between heat, that is
energy, and temperature, that is a measure of the average kinetic energy
of the atoms and molecules. The only difference with the missing
information, again dimensionless, is the scale: because the missing
information can be defined as the number of binary questions (with
answer "yes" on "no" only) which are necessary to identify the
microscopic state of the system, this number comes out to be incredibly
large for ordinary physical systems, involving a number of constituents
of the order of the Avogadro's number. This numerical difference makes
me think about the difference between mass and energy, connected by the
Einstein's most famous equation E = m c^2: they could be measured using
the same units (as it is actually done in high-energy physics), the sole
difference being that even a very small mass amounts to a huge quantity
of energy.

The mystery of the ever increasing entropy can be explained once (and
only if) we realize that the matter is not continue, but discrete. The
author basically follows the work of Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839-1903),
who developed the statistical mechanical theory of matter based on a
purely probabilistic approach. First, one has to accept the fact that
macroscopic measurements are not sensitive enough to distinguish
microscopic configurations when they differ for thousands or even
millions of atoms, just because the total number of particles is usually
very large (usually of the order of 10^23 at least). Then, under the
hypothesis that each microscopic state is equally probable, i.e. that
the system will spend almost the same time in each micro-state, one can
group indistinguishable micro-states into macro-states. The latter are
the only thing we can monitor with macroscopic measurements. Under the
commonly accepted hypothesis that all microscopic configurations are
equally probable, macro-states composed by larger numbers of
micro-states will be more probable, i.e. the system will spend more time
in such macro-states.

As a naive example, one could start with a system prepared in such a way
that all its constituents are in the same microscopic configuration.
One could think about a sample of N dices, all of them showing the same
face, say the first one. The questions could be: (1) "Are all dices
showing the same face?"--Yes--; (2) "Is the face value larger or equal
than 3?"--No--; (3) "Is the face value larger or equal than 2?"--No--;
at this point we know that the value is 1. In general, the number of
binary questions is proportional to the logarithm in base 2 of the
number C of possible configurations, that is O(log_2 C). Now imagine to
randomly mix the dice by throwing all of them. The answer to the first
question would be "No", so that a completely different series of
questions has to be asked to find the microscopic configurations.
First, one may procede by finding how many dice show the value 1, for
example, asking O(log_2 N) questions. Suppose that the answer is M

Dr Johnson's Reliquary of Rediscovered Words
By Blanik
I love this book. It lives in our van and whenever we stop I just pick it up and read random pages. I guess I've read the book a hundred times. I've not seen any similar books, although there are several word books around. Julian Burnside written one and Don Watson has done several, however this is different.

Fustigate is a little used word, but well worth knowing. As is inthronizate.

This book is based on four visits to China between 1971 and 1989 by Honda Katsuichi, an investigative journalist for Asahi Shimbun. His aim is to show in pitiless detail the horrors of the Japanese Army's seizure and capture of Nanjing in December 1937. Unvarnished accounts of the testimony - Chinese victims and Japanese perpetrators - to the rape and slaughter are juxtaposed with public relations announcements of the Japanese Army as printed in various Japanese newspapers of the time. The bland announcements of triumphant victories stand in bitter contrast to the atrocities that actually took place on the scene. The story unfolds with horrible detail as we watch the triumphant progress of the Japanese army whose troops were bent on rape and killing in the so-called "heat of battle." Yet by recalling the testimony of Japanese soldiers and reporters who were on the scene, as well as reproducing dispatches by Japanese Army authorities at the time, Honda makes it clear that the atrocities were part of a studied effort directed by the Japanese high command to impress the Chinese people with the power of its army and the folly of resistance to it - the estimate of 300,000 killed in these "military operations" is no exaggeratoin. Honda has worked with other Japanese journalists and scholars who have attempted to reveal the truth of the Nanjing massacre, provoked by the efforts of right-wing Japanese, including, sadly, many government officials, to whitewash the whole incident, even to the point of contending that a "massacre" never happened. This gripping account of the atrocities and cover-up joins other exposes - Chinese and now German - in keeping alive the memory of this shameful event.

From Library Journal
Japanese investigative journalist Honda's authoritative study of the Japanese Imperial Army's campaign of wholesale destruction, rape, and murder in central China (November 1937-March 1938) is far superior to Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking (LJ 1/98), a powerful but deeply flawed best seller that made its author an international celebrity. Honda's study, based on Japanese wartime soldiers' diaries, contemporary newspaper accounts, and numerous interviews in the 1970s and 1980s with Chinese survivors of the massacres, is an unflinching and relentlessly horrifying tale of the systematic savagery of Japan at war against the people of China. He confirms beyond any doubt that the massacres began as soon as the Japanese expeditionary forces landed in Hangzhou Bay, that they were sanctioned by the military commanders, and that they continued not for weeks but months. His refutation of the Japanese "massacre denial" literature is caustic and compelling. Essential for all academic and larger public libraries.ASteven I. Levine, Univ. of Montana, Missoula

A must-read for all with interest in the Nanking massacre
By Luke
Honda Katsuichi has written what may possibly be the most brutally important book yet published in English on the truth about the Nanjing massacre, something which he conceived as an investigative journalist after interviewing tens of victims on his journey to China. It's a factual, highly authentic account of eyewitnesses' interviews after Katsuichi traces out en route batches of living victims which has survived those terrible times. Back in Japan, its Japanese original version was one of the few publications which forced academic recognition that the Nanjing massacre is no longer something which could be swept under carpet.

I wonder why some Japanese reviewers still strenuously refused to admit the truth of the matter, a thing which is even in Japan no longer denied. Are they really so uninformed by the Japanese mainstream history academia, or is it really something else? Taking one misleading example of the "truth" as reported by a previous reviewer, Hiromi, China has always tended to downplay the massacre in Mao's time, not to up-play it. One wonders how "anti-Japanese" Honda is; what he has done is merely to uncover the truth, and the accusation is the equivalent of branding a German who admits to the Holocaust as an "anti-German". This book is certainly even more credible and better-written than Iris Chang's Rape of Nanking, since it is written by a Japanese for the Japanese themselves.

This is one of several books detailing the atrocities Japan committed in China during WWII, atrocities the Japanese and their government have yet to face up to in a mature and honest manner. I suppose, for Japan, it's a matter of losing face, and if that's so, Japan has a lot face to lose. Those who deny the Nanjing butchery are so blinded by their hate of communism that any truth exposed by anyone who even minutely appears to support China's view is instantly shrugged off as a lie(s). The bottom line is, the Nanjing Massacre and other Japanese atrocities are about as untrue as the existence of the Comfort Women (Chinese and Korean women kidnapped by Japanese soldiers so as to whore themelves among the Japanese military), and the Bataan Death March where so many American and British military and civilians were murdered along the long walk to Japanese POW camps, none of which Japan has yet to come to terms with either. In fact, the Japanese government even refuses to discuss the Comfort Women.

Those who deny Japan's responsibilty are the same kind we in the west refer to as revisionists when they say the Holocaust never happened. They're not revisionsists; they're liars. A few of the reviews of this book are so full of philosophical and political claptrap that it reminds one of a cheap hamburger loaded with filler. Unfortunatley, the burger is so full of God-knows-what that instead of pleasing the customer with its juicy full rounded appearance, one distasteful bite and you instantly realize you're about to throw up.

Great work by a Japanese Journalist.

This is the perfect translation of 'Nankin e no Michi'(The Road to Nanjing) written by Honda Katsuichi. Nanjing Massacre was not an accidental incident. The atrocities in China by Japanese soldiers began in Shanghai and resulted in the massacre in Nanjing. The author traces back the incident by detailed interviews with survivors, documents, diaries of Japanese soldiers and photographs. He doesn't argue about the numbers of victims, but why and how it occurred in the period. Appendix is also great. It consists of some significant victim interviews, quote from diaries and reminiscences of Japanese soldiers which are excerpts from other Honda's works. I'm sure this book will never disappoint the readers who really want to know the facts on Nanjing Massacre.

Review

"Owning this book is a potential major hazard to workplace productivity...there is the amazing online electronic version that can lead you seamlessly from one compelling section to another, with amusing diversions via Pub Med on the way. Whole days could be passed like this, so enormously interesting, wide-ranging and well-presented isthe content...This book is suitable for paediatric neurologists of all vintages and would make an excellent addition to any personal, departmental or hospital library. It is comprehensive, stimulating and engaging and I plan to direct trainees to it as a reference source. It is a long time since I put my hand in my pocket to purchase a textbook, but if I had not been fortunate enough to have been asked to review this book, I believe I would have made an exception...Swaiman et al has found a firm place on my occupational bookshelf."

European Journal of Paediatric Neurology, November 2012,

"Most of us who had the privilege of reviewing previous editions of this book gave it our unqualified recommendation, and this edition warrants the same high praise. Pediatric Neurology: Principles and Practice represents the combined knowledge and experience of many of the best minds in child neurology. It remains the sole indispensable standard not only for neurologists treating children but also for psychiatrists, pediatricians, developmentalists, rehabilitation specialists, and those in related disciplines. It is unlikely that anyone caring for children with neurological disorders can or should practice without it."

Gerald F. Tremblay, MD, JD

JAMA 2006; 296: 1296-97, Review of the fifth edition

"This well written, comprehensive textbook on pediatric neurology serves as a very good didactic resource on the basic science, clinical description, genetics, therapeutic management, and anticipatory counseling involved in disorders in pediatric neurology."- Korwyn Williams, MD, PhD (Phoenix Children's Hospital) 5 star Doody Rating!

Very Disappointed
By jmac3892
The first 12 chapters of the book are online only which is surprising as these form the foundation of the specialty, dealing with physical examination and diagnostics. This was unfortunate as this is the supposed "bible" of pediatric neurology. Hopefully, other expert consult titles will not follow this format in the future, omitting fundamental information from the hard copy. Omitting these chapters detracted greatly from the book, especially for someone new to the discipline who was looking for a comprehensive reference in one place. I will be selling this copy and purchasing the previous edition which deserves 5 stars.

Disappointed
By John R
Was very disappointed on receipt of this book as it did not include any of the essential tables or diagrams which were including in the specimen pages seen before purchase of the two volumes of the book - making this book practically useless. Amazon did repay full purchase amount for which I am grateful and realize that it is the publishers fault and not the fault of Amazon.

The Coming Financial Crisis: A Look Behind the Wizard's Curtain, by John Truman Wolfe

Is there really a Global Financial Ruler?
One that dictates policy to the Central Banks of the world?
Is there a Central Bank of central banks, that is senior to the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, the Bank of England and the other national banks that control interest rates, inflation, deflation, prosperity and depression?
Such a bank not only exists, but John Truman Wolfe exposed this heretofore unseen hand in the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and their plans for the next one.
No "conspiracy theorist" Wolfe names names, dates, places and actions.
If you have ever wanted to know who's behind the Wizard's curtain of international finance and how to protect yourself, start at page one.
And make no mistake, the events of 2007 and 2008 were a prelude: The next crisis, Wolfe predicts, will take the "bail-ins" used in the economic meltdowns in Cyprus and Greece and apply them worldwide, leaving depositors and consumers holding the bag, yet again.

Good info if you are unfamiliar withe past and future financial crisis in the economy of the world
By Ann S.
Most of the much too short book was a reprint of columns the author wrote as the previous crisis erupted...Well written and witty but old news...Only in the final chapter does he address the current situation. This chapter is worth reading and though he does NOT give dates or make solid predictions as advertised....It is a good summation of where we are and may be headed...Good for the unfamiliar reader of the past and future financial crisis...

I trust what this man says in this book. I worked for this man's company a decade ago and know that he knows what he is talking about. He is an ethical and trustworthy man. It is a must read for everyone to understand what is happening in the US and get an idea of how to protect oneself from what is likely to happen.
