Want to squeeze your whole personal life into 1 night per week and call it success? Didn't think so.

The author is missing the point, the title is misleading. If you are looking to shift priorities and excel at work while still having happy, uninterrupted personal time on a daily basis, this book will not help you. This book is about giving people one 'night' (as in, you worked that day, but truly 'clock out' at 6pm) off per week, and it's something that must be done at the team or organizational level. One night per week is not enough for a real personal life, and, most workers who are sleeping with their smartphones don't have control of their team and/or organization. If you are an executive looking for a way to help your team to stop sleeping with their smart phones one day per week, this might be moderately useful for you. I found it to be highly disappointing and wish I could return a kindle book :(

How to implement meaningful change in any corporate culture

Leslie A Perlow, of the Harvard Business Review, recently published Sleeping with Your Smartphone: How to Break the 24/7 Habit and Change the Way You Work. The book details the experimental implementation of a predictable time-off policy within the Boston Consulting Group to have just one night off a week. Through the process, Perlow and her team learned that the time off resulted in more than just a night of rest, but also enabled the consultants from BCG to feel better about work and the clients to be happier with the work provided. How is it possible that working less time yielded better results?
If anything, BCG has one of the worst reputations for work-life balance. Consultants often travel four days a week and are glued to their smartphones. Emails are exchanged at all hours of the night and on weekends. So even when consultants aren't at work, they're still responsive to work issues. Perlow calls this the Cycle of Responsiveness. People feel pressured to be available for work, coworkers notice the availability and contact them, schedules adjust to allow for the responsiveness and the cycle continues until it creates a culture.
The experiment was simple. Each consultant on a team would take one night off each week. Just one night of not answering emails until midnight, not working on PowerPoint slides in the hotel room and not sitting in the client's conference room until 8pm. Perlow's thesis was that change needed to be implemented as a team to address the cultural roots of the Cycle of Responsiveness.
The experiment almost immediately ran into trouble. Consultants didn't want to appear lazy or entitled in front of their coworkers, so they'd skip the night off, but then resent anyone who didn't do the same. So, to keep the experiment running, Perlow resurrected an old BCG practice, the Pulse Check. In a weekly meeting, team members would discuss how they felt about the progress and process of their work.
When people started opening up with meaningful dialog about the process, the time off became a shared goal that they could all work toward. They started developing systems to work better, cover for each other and share project information. The tacit goal was to enable each person to take a few hours off one night a week, but the overall effects were far more profound.
Since each person knew more about the process, they were able to anticipate each other's needs better. Because there was overlap in responsibility, the client felt more well served. And because the meaningful dialog allowed everyone to voice issues, the BCG consultants felt better about their job and their future with the firm.
Perlow writes well and uses the story of BCG to tease out the principles in the book. It's filled with quotes, stories and statistics culled from three years of experimenting with BCG teams around the world. Reading the book feels like taking a tour of the firm, the characters are warm and engaging (though they're often anonymous for the sake of confidentiality).
The book begins to lose steam toward the end. The introduction promised broad-ranging application, but Perlow kept returning to the stories of BCG, which start to feel worn out by the last chapter. Other than a lack of specific application outside the hyper-intense culture of BCG, the book Sleeping with Your Smartphone provides excellent, proven principles for how to bring change into an existing corporate culture and how to empower employees to join in the fight to make the company better.

Academically rigorous and wonderfully readable

"Sleeping with your Smartphone" is both academically rigorous and wonderfully readable. Perlow describes how her small field experiment at the Boston Consulting Group, done solely for research purposes, unleashed a global initiative that has involved over 1,000 teams and is mandated to be part of 80% of BCG teams globally by year end. The consultants she studied worked long hours and were expected to make work their top priority. When not at work, they incessantly checked their wireless devices to ensure that nothing new had come up. They put up with this pressure to always be available because they believed that to be successful in a professional service firm, they had to be accessible and willing to jump into action whenever called.

Unfortunately for them, this behavior created a "cycle of responsiveness" where genuine pressure to be on got amplified though the consultants' own actions. As they adjusted themselves to demands from clients and teammates by adapting the technology they used, altering their daily schedules, and modifying their interactions with their families and friends, their colleagues experienced this increased responsiveness, and their colleagues' own requests expanded rather than shrank. Interestingly, it was not the long hours or constant connectivity per se that bothered the consultants and led them to consider leaving the firm; it was the unpredictability of these hours. None of them could ever plan anything in the middle of the week.

As expected, the consultants could not break the cycle of responsiveness alone. What is exciting and unexpected in the book is that fundamental change did not require top management support or buy-in from clients. Instead, Perlow compellingly demonstrates that it was possible for her consultants to unplug before BCG top management got on board with the experiments and decided to press for widespread change in their organization's culture. What was required, instead, was collaboration among team members on the consultants' individual teams. By working with team members to establish a collective goal, encourage truly open dialogue, and make small, doable changes, the consultants were able to break the need to accommodate to the pressure to be always on. And, almost unbelievably if not for Perlow's careful documentation of the change process within project teams across BCG's global organization, devoting more time to their personal lives allowed the consultants to accomplish more rather than less at work.

By addressing the problem of unpredictable time demands, Perlow was able to both improve the consultants' lives and improve employee retention for the organization. Based on the success of her experiments, BCG decided to try to transform its culture into one that respects those who set boundaries. This is fundamental change in an industry where there are such strong beliefs about the need to always be connected. And, it is more than enough reason for anyone who struggles with being always "on" to read this book and try to create change in their own organizations.

AMAZING!!!!!

C.C Hunter once again proves she is an amazing writer. Spellbinder is truly a great novella.with heartbreak, comedy, friendship, action, and romance, this book is the perfect blend of all elements. It's amazing that we get to finally read from Miranda's pov and we get to see how much she has grown since Born at Midnight. She's learned to overcome challenges and so many other things. I hope we see more things from Miranda's pov in the future :) anyway overall this book gets 5 stars! (Like all the other books in Shadow Falls) THANK YOU C.C. FOR WRITING ANOTHER AMAZING BOOK!!!

Miranda's turn in the spotlight!! And it's awesome!

The world of Shadow Falls has been a favorite of mine since the very beginning! I loved Kylie's story and going with her on her journey about love, friends, learning what she is and all the adventures that came of it! I am loving Della's series as well as she learns more about her family ties and opening herself up to her feelings, whether they result in good or bad. So to now have Miranda have her own story, the third in the trio, this positively delighted me! C.C. Hunter's Spellbinder, while novella, is still Miranda's chance in the spotlight and it was a marvelous story indeed!

Miranda is still heartsick over the way Perry left her just like that. Breaking her heart as he moved halfway around the world. Now she finds herself gearing up for a competition to become a high priestess and wouldn't you know it, it takes place in Paris, the very city Perry ran off to.

But nearly instantly danger strikes and two of the competitors are murdered, before they even began the competition back in the States. Burnett is there along with Shawn, who happens to have a soft spot for Miranda. It seems all the girls are in the midst of a love triangle, yet Kylie's is already resolved and things ended happily on all accounts. Della still harbors feelings for Steve and Chase and that's one triangle I can't seem to figure out who to root for! And the same goes for Miranda's here as well. I was all for Perry in the beginning, but his breaking up and leaving Miranda hurt me like it hurt her. And then when the two finally meet again, it's like Perry wants things to go back to the way they were before. He's learned to control his abilities and he's ready to play boyfriend again, and this angered me.

Shawn on the other hand is a sweet guy. I can't decide if I am totally team Shawn yet, but I have to say I was rooting more for him then Perry. I don't like that Perry thinks he can try to make things up and be Miranda's boyfriend again lickety split. It's aggravating!

Moving aside from the romance, there was yet another shocking reveal in this one. I refuse to touch on it, but all we can say it was jaw-dropping!

Familiar faces make appearances in this one, it really ties the two companion series together in a way. I wish Lucas could've been in it, but alas, this is not Kylie's story so there was no need for him. The pacing to this one was great! It was a tad slow in the beginning, but really it was just the starting point, the pace never faltered after that and it was excitement after more excitement!

The only thing about the ending I didn't like was the romance was never really resolved. Miranda still has her choice to make. And it's killing me not knowing which guy she will choose. Will she return to Perry after he broke her heart and expects things to go back to happy romance time or give Shawn a try...and there's more to Shawn then I'm telling you, but I'll let you experience that for yourselves! So my burning question now is, will Miranda's story be resolved in Unspoken or will she get another novella?! And since I read this in ARC format that means the wait for knowing the answer will be that much longer! Grr...

Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars--basically because of how things ended with the romance and the not knowing and the not knowing of when we can see it resolved resulted in a minor .5 takeoff. But other than that I loved this novella! As I do with all the Shadow Falls books!

Witches, Vampires, and Danger... Oh My!

Miranda Kane has always felt that she is a screw-up, especially when it comes to magic. When her mother gives her an added incentive to do well at a spellcasting competition, she finds herself somehow in first place... and in more danger than she could imagine.

While Spellbinder is a short story in the Shadow Falls universe, it's not necessary that you read the other books before reading this one, since enough background is provided that you are able to get into the story easily. I haven't (yet) read the other books in the series, but after reading this one I'm excited to start reading from the beginning! The author is able to write characters that seem read, even in a fantasy world, and while a short story doesn't give a lot of time for character development there are a few twists and turns in this story to make it interesting. Not only do we have mystery and murder in the plot, but we also dip into Miranda's past and her relationships with her friends and enemies alike. The story isn't perfect, but it's a fun and enjoyable short story.

If you're a fan of magic, mystery, fantasy, and light romance, I recommend that you pick up Spellbinder by C.C. Hunter.

Waste of time

I bought this book in anticipation of getting some helpful hints for the test. There are about 3 pages worth of information about the actual test. The rest of the book is about finding a job and how to pass an interview...which I didn't even read. It gives such suggestions as "get a good nights sleep" and "take your time on the test". What a waste of money...

Garbage Chinese translation.

Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your money. Obviously 99% of the content is regurgitated from a general template on any certified course. The translation is very poor and reads like the original script was written in chinese. How any publisher has the audacity to publish this drivel is beyond me.

John Hedley Brooke held the Andreas Idreos Chair of Science and Religion and Directorship of the Ian Ramsey Centre at Oxford University from 1999 to 2006. He is currently President of the International Society for Science and Religion.

Numbers is Hilldale Professor of the History of Science and Medicine and of Religious Studies and a member of the department of medical history and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught for over three and a half decades. He is Past President of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science.

Good overview

This is a good overview of the history of the interaction of science and religion for the general reader. Most of the chapters are, understandably, on the Western religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). There is also a very good chapter on China and an informative (at least to me) on Africa. But I am taking away one star because the chapters on Buddhism and India are rather weak. If you are particularly interested in the interaction of science and religion in Hinduism and Buddhism, this is not the book for you.

About the Author

Steve Ogne is a nationally known church planting trainer, coach, and consultant for Church Resource Ministries and coauthor of the bestselling Church Planter’s Toolkit. He holds degrees from Azusa Pacific University, Talbot Seminary, and Northwest Graduate School of Ministry and lives with his wife and three sons in Somis, California.

Tim Roehl is a pastor, church planter, and now a missionary with Church Resource Ministries, leading the organization’s A*C*T*S team. He holds a degree in Bible and Pastoral Ministries, master’s in Church Management, and doctorate in Transformational Leadership for Church Multiplication. He and his family live in Blaine, Minnesota.

Coaching Post-modern and Missional Leaders

TransforMissional Coaching adds to a growing collection of books on coaching in ministry. The book's unique contributions are around coaching Post-modern leaders, coaching from a holistic missional mind-set, and coaching out of character and relational authority.

Steve Ogne and Tim Roehl are long-time coaches and church planting practitioners. Over the years their coaching has shifted from those planting "come unto us" churches, to those who are post-modern and missional. Their collective experience is detailed in this treasure chest filled with ministry coaching gems.

The authors advocate a hands-on approach to coaching that is both relational and experiential. A coach is not an advisor-teacher, as many who find themselves helping others often behave. Nor is a coach a passive sounding board who only listens and asks questions. A coach cares, celebrates, and challenges, as well as listens. Two chapters focus on the coach's character and relational authority.

Reading the book, I imagine many leaders will feel challenged to advise less, listen more, and grow in asking excellent questions. Several chapters will specifically help in this regard. The authors provide teaching, inspiration, and examples for listening and asking great questions.

The book also serves as a toolbox of coaching helps. There are three models for holistic coaching, more than 200 sample questions (yes, I counted!), how to adapt your coaching style using DISC, how to effectively coach Post-modern leaders, and help on coaching teams.

Throughout the book the authors tell stories to illustrate various coaching situations. The stories paint a picture of a coaching relationship. I have heard both Ogne and Roehl coach and can tell you they practice what they preach - they listen, ask great questions, challenge according to the coachee's goals, and keep their advice to a minimum.

The subtitle of the book is "empowering leaders in a changing ministry world." Two facts we don't want to ignore: the ministry world is changing rapidly and empowering leaders is the only solution to adapt and make an impact. Ogne and Roehl provide us with important helps to re-skill to be more empowering and more missional.

Great Introduction to Coaching

I was looking to add coaching to my portfolio and decided to order several resources on coaching.. Transformissional Coaching was by far the most complete foundation in coaching I recieved. This book had plenty of foundational information as well as questions and models to get me started..
